Any recommendations for improving streaming?

I have an Imac with an airport extreme router upstairs.

In my living room I have my television, my ATV, and an airport express base station plugged into the wall a few feet away from the ATV.

I have a ton of movies and music on my upstairs computer. And for the longest time had no problem streaming them with no skips or delays or anything.

But recently (coincidentally after I did the recommended upgrade on my Airport firmware) every time I try and stream it skips and it buffers for several minutes after every chapter.

I have no other devices that use this network, and the computer itself is plugged into the ethernet cable.

Any advice on improving streaming for my movies? With music it doesn't pose an issue and I stream all my music to the AtV with no problem. I know obviously video is a different animal but it's just odd that this just started happening.

Are there any other computers on your network using it wirelessly?

A G or even B system could be connecting and slowing you down dramatically.

Sorry for my ignorance but I have no idea what that means.

It means run an ethernet cable to connect all your devices. Somehow I don't think that's the solution you have in mind.

Anyway, are there any other networks running in your area? Try to choose a channel that isn't being used by other devices. Also, some channels are generally better than others. I don't have any airtunes streaming problems with channel 1, but channel 6 causes problems. (All of this gets selected in the Airport Utility under Manual.)

Also, you'll have a better connection if it's set to 802.11g only (or 802.1n, if all your devices support it).

I have lots of interference in my area so wireless streaming isn't an option for me. Instead I use Ethernet Home Plugs which work a treat.

The only drawback with home plugs is they don't always work between ring mains if maybe your upstairs is on a different circuit to downstairs.

The only option I have is to run an ethernet from my base station in the wall, to the ATV itself. I tried that but then when I went to view my movies it showed nothing there. Would I have to reset the library up using ethernet?
