Any special steps when upgrading iPhone to not lose data

When I get the new iPhone I'm worried I'll lose app data such as my checkbook app and text messages. Is there anything special I have to do or when I connect the new phone to my macbook for the first time will it automatically transfer everything over as it was on my 3G?
