I originally had a Apple TV and ripped all my movies via handbrake with the Apple TV presets. I bought a PS3 so I didn't find much need for my Apple TV anymore and sold it off. I'm in the early process of ripping all my movies again and was wondering what's the best way to go at this. I want something future proof so I don't have to re-rip later on.

One thing that annoyed me is how I had to have all the movie files inside iTunes to be able to play it on the Apple TV. That really limits the space I have on my laptop, and always connecting it to a external harddrive isn't always so practical for me.

The original MP4 files rips I made with handbrake with the Apple TV presets do not work on the PS3. I was wondering if I had the PS3 preset, does it work the other way around on the Apple TV?

Sorry. I know I'm just randomly saying stuff here and there, but you guys have any thoughts? One extra bonus is if I was able to sync these movies on my iPhone as well...but that's not too important right now.

I don't have a PS3 but I do have a iPhone. Have you looked at the Universal Preset in 0.9.3? I played around with multiple presets by encoding only a couple chapters until I found what was good for me and then saved the preset.

How do you like the PS3 for streaming movies, music and photos?

I am looking to get rid of my bug-ridden AppleTV and was debating on a PS3.

I haven't had the chance to try steaming yet with the PS3. However, hooking the external HDD to the PS3 as I tried this morning works perfectly fine as long as the filetype is correct.

One thing to note. I started becoming anal about cover arts, movie descriptions, ratings, etc. for movie files on iTunes when I had the Apple TV. I wanted everything to be perfect. Thank goodness I broke out of that habit after getting the PS3. It may not be as pretty as scrolling down a list of movies on the Apple TV, but all I need to worry about is renaming the file. Simple. That's it!

I have both and heres my opinion after using both:
-ATV streams better than my PS3 (using wireless G router, I don't have a newer N router)
-Movies/photos/music saved to the internal HDD play the same quality for both (both connected through HDMI)
-Apple TV interface is easier, nicer imo
-You can install Boxee -> Hulu to the Apple TV which was the deal breaker for me, so I use the ATV to stream and watch digital movies
-Apple TV is more portable and easier to move around

thats what I used to stream digital content to my ps3 and from my experience Apple TV streamed better and didn't cost extra money :)

Interesting, I have been having numerous issues with AppleTV, rebooting, freezing, etc. It has become a pain, when I just want to listen to a song real quick it sometimes takes about 5 minutes to get it functioning.

I might just go back to the Airport Express router and forget about streaming video...ugh.

I'm using the old school airport express without any problems
