iMac touch?
********. No point waiting on software which can slip when the hardware is ready now.
But what if required software is not ready?
What if Apple were to add features to the new iMacs which rely on Snow Leopard? For example touch.
Some HP media center PCs have touch screens, so it is not totally unrealistic to have iMacs with touch features at some point.
But let's not debate how useful an iMac touch is. I'd just say it would make sense for some applications. And on the whole I'd see it more akin to people buying a Wacom tablet as an extra often leaving the mouse connected. Why would they need a mouse? Because some applications are still easier and faster to navigate with a mouse than a pen. Same applies to a touch interface. I wouldn't want to use a touch screen instead of a mouse, but in addition.
And use it to give my click-finger a rest and the mouse to give my arms a rest.
Certainly some applications would benefit like Frontrow or sorting/manipulating photos in iPhoto or choosing songs in iTunes. iTunes could almost work like on an iPod touch. Or some games.
Reportedly the current version of Mac OSX 10.5 does not support touch very well and it would be rather difficult to add it throughout. Yet Snow Leopard being completely reworked from the ground up will have touch features embedded everywhere.
Or in other words. If the next iMac model comes with a touch screen, then it would make sense to wait for Snow Leopard - and not burden Leopard with a hacked-in solution.
I wouldn't be surprised if Snow Leopard appears much earlier than people expect, perhaps in March or April while WWDC gets focussed on iPhone/iPod OSX 3.0.
