First of all sorry for long title :p, at least i was specific.

Anyway the title pretty much says it all.

I just set up my Apple TV and im luving it, the quality is very good, but can it get better?

You can hack it so that you can play video_ts folders or iso's if you like. I just use the Apple TV preset in HandBrake and it seems just as good as the DVD to my eyes.

I was wondering the same thing, when converting DVDs (purchased ones of course) to .mp4, so I can have them on my TV, I'm using handbrake and setting the bitrate to 4000 kbps (4 mbps). I'm hoping the quality is going to be good.

This is however taking quite a while, I was wondering the lowest bitrate before the picture really starts looking crappy.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, just curious.

Thanks!

A 4000 kbps bitrate is a waste of space, in my opinion. Get the latest version of HandBrake (0.9.3) and use the Apple TV preset. It uses Constant Quality, expressed as a percentage. The default is 59%. I bump it up to 61% and turn on the decomb filter. The result is a DVD-quality encode in a pretty small file size.

I'd also recommend turning on deteleceine (if using "Same as Source") in .9.3 along with decomb. Should work very well for the majority of sources out there.

FYI, I just tried these settings and the movie won't show up on the ATV. Also, with version 9.3, when I select the ATV preselect, it defaults to avg bit rate (2500) NOT constant Quality. So I select CQ, set to 62% and ripped with decomb on. No joy on ATV.

Back to my old presets...

FYI, go to Presets > Update Built in Presets since you are obviously still using the 0.9.2 presets.

many thanks...giving it another try right now.

I was already more than happy with the 0.9.2 ATV settings. Waiting to see how much better this will look....
