I've had my iPhone for 3 weeks now, and unlocked it via iPhoneSimFree last week. Working perfectly on Virgin Mobile. £40 per month tarrif, 500 voice minutes and 1000 texts. I never use all of them so when they roll over (as they did today) I start the month with 1000 minutes and 2000 texts. Good enough for me! So far I've been able to use wi-fi free of charge wherever I've needed it (Hotel in Ireland, my Gym, Bluewater shopping centre) so am not too bothered about the whole Cloud thing. I guess it will be different for other people, but this solution works really well for me.

I'm on o2 at the moment - but after this news I think I may purchase one from the US now, unlock it and keep my current contract. How would I go about buying one/shipping one over to good ole' Britain? Recommended companies?

i'm looking for the same info too..

my friend has ordered the iPhone which will get delivered to them tomorrow, and will ship it to me in the UK..

i've just been searching the web and forums on how to unlock the phone (using a GUI app)..

doesn't sound very easy if you dont really know what you;re doing..

if all else fails i might go with iphoneunlockuk..

anyone used them yet? it's only £40

In other words, you have an iPhone and have successfully unlocked/activated it... or you've done it for someone else.
Some details please.

What network you now on?
Where and how did you get your iPhone?
What guide did you use to unlock/activate your phone?

Thanks for any information supplied.

See I have a friend how's going to LA at the end of September, and I want her to bring me one back... but I'm with 02 and want to keep my current contract, but unlocking/activating the iPhone over here I'm in two minds about as I don't want to wreck it and have a £199.00 paperweight... although it'll be a very nice paperweight.

Yes, thats im kinda worried about, but no one really has had that many problems with unlocking it, so im going to take the chance. And its sooo much cheaper than buying it in UK.

Yeah i know it's gonna be an amazing deal where i can get it for 199, instead of 295 + the 02 contract fee.
I'm one of these people who rushes into things and then gets buyers remorse - but you're I think i make take the change too.

Yea, definately i dont think ill regret getting it, because if it doesnt work ill probs just sell it on eBay and still get the same money anyways. BUt it should work like 98% chance it will work, there has been soo many UK iPhone unlocks!

I've had my Unlocked iPhone for a few days now and have some more coming in from the US as i and everyone else is just so impressed by it . Feel free to contact me direct ( via here ) and i'll help you unlock your phones it isn't totally simple but simple enough.

That said i've unlocked mine a few times now due to playing and restoring etc etc . The thing to note about an unlocked iPhone is there appears to be NO VOICEMAIL since.

I'm working on this now.

More than willing to take questions.

PS : The unlocking process seems a lot easier on a Mac. Don't go paying the £40 for it, it's free. If you REALLY want to pay, i'll take £20 or beer tokens.

My friend is going to pick the iPhone up for me in LA at the end of the month! WOOHOO!

Also my friend is going to try and get it from an Apple store. So what will she need? Apart from the money - which I'll give to her?
Does she just go in and ask for an 8gb iPhone? and then pay for it, or will she be asked for other information?

LCaller - i make take you up on your advice offer when it comes to Unlocking/activating.
By the way what network you with on your iPhone?

Thanks for any information

When we bought ours all they wanted was an email address. Get it from the Apple store and not the AT&T store as in the Apple store it's now more like buying a peripheral. Pay you money and walk out.

I'm on O2 right now but i may change to TMobile as they have EDGE and Web & Walk package for only £9.99 which is unlimited internet.

Sorry for the bad photo better one soon.

Was it easy to unlock it and activate it? This is whats now making me worried that I can't do it or do it wrong.

Yes & No.

Yes : activation is easy. JailBreak is a piece of cake
No : unlock isn't as easy but it is do-able .

Seriously if you have the time to do it you'll be fine. I unlocked mine with AnySim which worked once then failed on the 2nd time , so i used and older longer method and it all worked.

The guides that are out there are easy to follow, however i will take block unlock bookings in a pub garden somewhere for a session :)

Thats awesome, did you just get someone to buy it for you or did you buy it yourself from USA?

I bought mine back with me , but i have someone sending me some over. If i'd known people would pay £580 for them like they are doing for an unlocked version on ebay i'd have loaded up !!!

if this carries on i'm flying out :)

Hi Chaps,

Getting my iphone in 2 days.Im on an o2 contract ,so if i put my o2 simcard in the usa purchased iphone, without unlocking the phone, will it work? Or do i have to unlock it.If anyone can show me easiest way to unlock for dummies without going down the road of downloading multiple aps to unlock then id be grateful.also, wil the 1.1.1 firmware screw up the unlock??

A lot of us are expecting 1.1.1 to screw the unlock , however the phones comes with 1.0.2 ( or lower ) on.

There are some easy unlock guides out there but i'm just going to do a video over the weekend as a walk through.
