Any updates or price drops likly the next 6 months?

<! update: So I got the Mac pro yesterday and it's up and running. Reading the forums threads I has most of my questions answered: 3 dimms better then 4 dimmes, correct?

Though, there is one thing that I want to know and try:

Blu-ray. After what I have understood, you can buy a blu-ray player, put it into the macpro and it will work, but without any external programs it will not be able to run blu-ray movies.

My question is: Any blu-ray player, or are the some that don't work? Is it a site with a list? I have googled and find none. / !>


I'm about to buy a mac pro (quad core), I have followed it's regular updates and usually it's updated at a one year interval.

However, been burned before, do anyone know or think there will be any updates soon small or big, or price drops the next 6 months? :confused:

apple does not drop prices for mac pros

Well suitable CPUs for a updated Mac Pro arent going to be avaliable till the end of the year, so there wont be any big updates (so wont be any updates because there is no need) until Late 2011/Early 2012. There also wont be any price drops as Apple loves their margins, and they only ever drop prices when they release new models, and they havent done that for the Mac Pro for years.
 
Sadly NO. Apple rarely drops the price during the life of a product as component prices come down unlike almost all other computer or electronic companies. Therefore the best value is at early vs late in the product cycle.

Older models have value can can be found new like this Mac Pro for $1,799, else Apple refurbs offers the best value

Thank you. It was the kind of answer I was looking for :) Actually it was one year it dropped 5% in Norway, but I do not remember when.

In the past, Apple's update cycle was quite predictable, but since the last year they've seemed to changed that, which makes sense. So i wouldn't rely too much upon this old upgrade cycles. If you really need this machine right now, don't waste your time. And indeed, I cannot recollect any instance of Apple dropping its price for Mac Pro before the update.

In Belgium, Apple has never dropped the price of MP, just never, neither before nor after any update... Also no refurbished machines, I wonder why.

I stand corrected if I'm wrong, but I do remember that it costed around 20.000 NOK and then dropped to 19.000 NOK. Now a days the price is 20990 NOK around £2260 for the quad core. Worth it of course, but it had been a bit bitterly if the price dropped 2 months after I bought it :)

Another question is who dropped the price: some Apple's distributor or Apple itself? Distributors or resellers could lower the price, as they have to move the stock before the major upgrade.
 
If you'd followed the progress as you said, you wouldn't be asking these questions. Anyway, updates are possible, the price will drop when hell freezes over.

Updates arent really feasible till Q4 2011 - the appropriate CPUs wont be released until then (Sandy Bridge Xeons - whatever their being called).

My first mac was an eMac. At the time I was a student and felt I had spend a lot of money, and became a little shock when they updated it just 2 months later and reduced the price as well (1ghz to 1,25ghz). At that time I did not know macrumors or any buyer's guide.

So when you are going to spend 20990 NOK you wanna double check.

I know that Mac pros updates have been quite regularly, but I want to be sure, and with the answer that the next CPU is far away, I relax a bit more.

With the Intel delay this week re: the bad chips relating to Sandy Bridge, it may be a while.

Won't have any bearing. They know what the issue is and enterprise isn't affected in anyway as chipsets haven't gone for manufacturing yet.
