Any updates to dSLRs coming up?

Before I go and buy a dSLR, I would like to know if any updates are expected or coming up or likely. Or are there any rumors?

I am asking about these cameras:
Nikon D40 (D30 anyone?)
Pentax K100D (apart from k100d Super)
Canon 400d

Is there any rumors community for digital cameras?

Only update I am aware of is the Canon 40D but shouldn't affect the range of cameras you are looking at.

So when do you expect the new line up of entry level dSLRs? I expect a price drop of atleast $100. If that is the case, then I dont mind waiting (as I dont NEED a new camera). The price might even overlap the high end P/S cams.

Olympus updated their E-510 and E-410 in 3/2007.

Canon introduced the 400D in 8/06

Nikon's D40 came out 11/06 and D40x in 3/07

Pentax just introduced the K100D Super in 6/07

The Sony Alpha came out 6/06

So I doubt anything new's coming out until '08, and don't see why there'd be anything other than a gradual reduction in pricing.

I don't think the waiting game makes as much sense with cameras as it does with computers.

Uh huh.....

The cameras on the top of my list are the K100d and D40, both have features which the other doesnt and they ARE both kind of important to me. I feel like waiting to see if the next line up brings out something more decisive.

Oh and a side question regarding the two cameras:
The D40 has VERY good ISO performance (better than the 350d which CNET.com said has virtually non-existent noise). On the other hand the k100d has low ISO performance but it has SR. In low light which one do you expect to give better results? If the ISO goes up on the D40, then it wont affect the picture too much. If I increase the SS on the k100d, the picture wont be blurry but the sensor might produce noise because of low ISO performance and the slow SS. In this case which one do you think has better low light performance?

In that range, no. The consumer dSLR space is full. Nikon could possibly update the D50 but I think they're trying to sort out their line since the addition of the D40x.

Sony has a newer, more expensive model coming in a few months and Olympus has the E-1 replacement coming around October.

Outside the consumer line, can I expect anything from Nikon? The D200 wasn't really replaced by the D80 and has been sitting for quite sometime without a replacement. As I see it this is the "new" Nikon lineup:

D40x (consumer)
D80 (prosumer)
D200 (money to waste/semi-pro/lightweight pro)
D2x (pro)

I don't want to start a flame-war, but Ken Rockwell claims that Nikon is developing a D3xx line. Any other info?

The D40 and D40x are pretty much the same camera, so you can't really call the D40x and upgrade from the D40. It's more an alternative. I can't see anyone really going from the D40 to D40x.

The oldies in the Nikon and Canon world are:

1Ds Mark II (4th quarter 2004)
5D (3rd Quarter 2005)
30D (1st Quarter 2006)

D2Hs (1st Quarter 2005)
D200 (4th Quarter 2005)
D2Xs (2nd Quarter 2006)

The thing is, there isn't as much competition at the high end as there is at the low end. Sure the 1Ds Mark II is three years old, but what's knocked it off its pedestal since then?

There also seem to be five slots in Canon and Nikon's lineups:

cheap consumer (D40 / 350D)
high-price consumer (D40x / 400D)
prosumer (D80 / 30D)
semi-pro (D200 / 5D)
high speed (D2Hs / 1D Mark III)
Pro (D2Xs / 1Ds)

These cameras don't actually line up exactly in any way, but they fill respective slots for the companies.

I'm sure they are of course working on a replacement, but the D200 is a great camera and anyone wondering if they should wait... shouldn't. The D200 offers quite a bit and if you want one, buy one! :D

Edit: Getting back to the OP, although I am a Nikon man and think the D40 is nice... however, I must put my vote in for the Pentax, they are nice cameras and pretty capable... although perhaps a bit limited if you get really serious about photography. Seems Pentax doesn't have quite as good a selection of lenses as Nikon and Canon.

No they are not actually. The fact that the D40x has an extra 4 MP's at the top end, faster continuous shooting mode and a lower base ISO rating all adds up to be quite a significant upgrade. It still stinks that neither have an auto-focus motor.

According to the stock system we use it has a release date of 9/2 and we are carrying the kit with a 28-105 IS lens for $1599.
