I'm 14 so I'm starting to think about getting a car. Since Im a technology freak I was wondering if there was any way I could make like $300 or so a month doing website building/development/anything so that I could afford to buy a car? Thx

Unless you're freakishly good at web design, no. Sorry, but no one I know would ever hire a 14 year old to design their site unless they were unreal good. Get a job at a grocery store or something. You'll make more money a month there anyway.

I think you have to be 16 to legally work? Maybe thats just California. Do you have an online portfolio?

With some good search engine optimization (google it for more info), write a ton of useful keyword rich articles and you could make that 300 a month within a year or so by monetizing your website with adsense / affiliate marketing, etc.

Just don't think it will be an easy task and be very patient. You will make 0.08$ or so per day for a long long time until you have a heavy presence on the search engines.

IMO, you would have a better chance at succeeding doing that than trying to get hired for a web-design job.

Good luck kid, your on the right path wanting to earn some money yourself. Most kids are spoiled these days.

I started making websites when I was about your age and paid off computers, a car and much more of my stuff doing so. Your better off creating content than playing video games all evening like most kids do.

Mozart was writting his first little piece when he was 5 and his first symphony at 8

i'm not sure age/experience should be a limitation...
for example i just come from one of the web page that has been designed by you and couple of click after i arrived, i got an error on the page... humm humm
So obviously even advance designer can make little mistakes... maybe newbie could get something decent...

Ok that said... making money in this area is not too easy... and there is huge competition in the area.
So maybe you can look for the store or places you like or you pass by and check if they have a web pages and then proposed to make them something or make something better.
An other solution is also going for a bike... you would help the environment and that doesn't cost much(yeah i'm a stupid european ecologist)

Cheers

Never let your dreams die, and never listen to anyone tell you what you should not be doing if it's something meaningful to you and a worthwhile endeavor which in my opinion this is.

You should contact your school to see if they need development for the school web site where you could serve as apprentice (junior developer) and possibly earn credits in addition to money through a voucher program.

You might want to contact friends, involving your parents to ask their friends or local businesses, to get you leads for serving your community. Just like in the old days when I mowed lawns, this is a Gen-X way of extra cash. And since it's all local businesses, friends of the family, etc., they see it in the same way -- allowing you to get experience and do it safely.

I'm sure others will join in beyond the advice already presented here and previously. Whatever you do, I applaud you for doing it. Smart kid.

300 a month? Lets see, if you work 80 hours a month (that's "part time") at McDonald's they pay minimum wage which is about $7 per hour. Figure you will take home at least $5 per hour. So you can do better than $300 a month working any of the jobs that kids typically can get. Around here the fast food places hire everyone who applies.

The way to get work at a web designer is to have an on-line portfolio. Make up some web sites for imaginary companies then use that to get work for some not-for-profets for free then finally look for some paying jobs.

Next question is: What do you know how to do? Can you set up an e-comerce site with shopping cart and invetory and credit card processing? Make some examples and get them on-line. If you start now you can build a good portfoilo in a year or two. You need to find out what people will want and include this in your example web sites. I don't think anyone needs many static pages. They will be wantig dynamic content and forms and some kind of database.

Just make sure you make have a great portfolio that shows off both your design and technical skils

One other thing. I think you have to be 18 to be able to sign a binding contract, get a business license and so on.

You have a point. by the time this 14 year old gets a car gas will be over $5 per galon. (It is $3.65 today) If he works for the typical rate of pay that most 16 year olds do he will work just about one hour for each galon of gas he buys. (an entire weeek's paycheck goes straight into the gas tank.) Insurance costs (about $2K or 20 weekly paychecks per year) will eat up what does not go into the gas tank.. I think the days of high school kids paying for their own cars is comming to an end soon."

Doesn't hurt to try... Just don't bite off more than you can chew. Try getting business in person from local places. Charge a reasonable rate given that you're 14.

I'm 14 and I have made a couple of thousand from web-design (mostly pay-per-download rapidweaver templates). One thing that Is vital (i think) to get some design jobs is search web design job boards for junior freelance positions. And post in forums when somebody wants a design done or something. BTW: don't undersell your skills

Ok.

Mozart was sick. Which is why I said "unless you're unreal good." Go back and take some time to look around my site. After a few seconds, you'll be able to tell that we're still building it. And by no means am I an advanced designer. I'm just a bored college kid who likes technology.
