This might be a little OT but I know how knowledgable the members here are that I will get some worthwhile feedback.

I have 2 USB drives that are backups from my Synology NAS. It seems my NAS has bite the dust, looks to be a motherboard issue.

I'd like to be able to access the backups I've made of the folders I had on the NAS. I believe the file system of the drives is EXT4, but I'm not totally sure.

I installed OSX Fuse, which says it works with EXT4, but all I get when I connect the drive is that it is unreadable.

Any other options besides being another Synology??

EXT4 yes...

Qnap is another one... but Synology is just as good i think. I use Qnap for central storage at home. with few backups on external (mirrored).

Unless the backups on the NAS is newer, i'd just use the one from USB, until u get a it sorted.

Mine died, too, and I quit using Synology over this issue. The only way I could access a drive from a Synology device was with Linux (using a VMWare Virtual Machine). There may be other ways, but it is a hassle. Now, I just use a 4 TB HGST drive in an external USB enclosure. It is about 50% faster copying over USB 3.0 than over a Gigabit network connection.
