Any way to change the zoom button behavior back to Mavericks style operation?

Hello, I just downloaded and installed the Public beta today on my spare iMac 24 from 2007 (it's the oldest iMac that can run Yosemite). hehe. Surprisingly it runs quite well. But I digress.

The Public Beta is great except for the oh-so-annoying zoom button behavior. I used to use it in conjunction with RightZoom to make it act like the Windows maximize key. I never really understood why the zoom button behaved differently for so many different applications. I don't really like full screen mode either.

So is there any way to revert the zoom button's behavior back to its previous behavior? I did a search on this and the only thing that shows up is articles that say that Yosemite is changing the button's behavior, and nothing on how to revert it.

Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance!

EDIT: I do know about the [option] key trick, I'm looking for something that will do it permanently.

You can't revert it in any currently known way. You can however use the previous classic OS X zoom function by holding Command while clicking the green button, or by double clicking the window title bar (if "double click to minimize" is disabled)

I just tested both [option] and [command] and it appears both work for the same function (reverting behavior back to old way).

What a shame there is no fix as of yet. I hope there is some indie developer out there working on a solution or something..

If you like the behavior of RigthZoom I can report that it still works in Yosemite, and in this case, overrides fullscreen and just maximizes the window to the largest size available while still showing the menubar & dock.

BTT to the rescue:

If you don't like the new behavior of the green window button in Yosemite, you can now change it with BTT using the trigger "Leftclick Green Window Button" in the tab "Other" in BTT's main preference window. To get back the old behavior just use the predefined action "Zoom Window Below Cursor"

Users should not have to rely on third party software to do this. I have filed a feedback request for a user option to change the default behaviour.

Whilst I think integrating the fullscreen and zoom button is great, I really think Apple should provide an option (in system preferences) for users to toggle the default behaviour. I would rather have zoom/maximise as default behaviour and use alt/option + green button to activate fullscreen.

I don't mind if Yosemite has fullscreen turned on by default, I'm sure many people will like it - but I do think users should have an option to change it if they wish.

XtraFinder has this feature but unfortunately it only works in Finder windows and not all other windows such as Safari. It also confuses things by using command + green button instead of the OSX default of alt/option + green button.

Even if you like fullscreen by default but think users should have an option then I suggest providing feedback to Apple.

I don't see any change in the RC :-( For me it seems like quite a major 'dumbing down' milestone for the UI. I agree, there should at least be an option to make Zoom the default behavior. There are already lesser options in System Preferences. We used to also find command line hacks to change such things but I have not found this klnd of solution either. I thought the additional window button in Mavericks was the best overall solution.

Not only did I provide feedback via the Yosemite feedback app, I wrote to Apple as I think this is a big step burying an intelligent feature that is part of the DNA, it's an original Apple OS feature that sets Apple apart from the crowd.

I've provided similar feedback. It feels very much like catering to a user base that is moving from Windows machines to Macs. It doesn't really bother me that Apple would alter the default function based on their user base, I just hate losing a feature I've come to really like. I hope they will provide an option to set default behavior to "classic zoom" in the future.
