Any way to get out of iPhone Upgrade Program early?

So girlfriend is on the iPhone Upgrade Program, but she would like to upgrade using AT&T Next instead of iPhone Upgrade Program due to the terrible experience we've had with it so far. I know the contract states 24 month payments, with 12 month upgrade eligibility. But can you turn the 6S in, upgrade to the 7 on AT&T Next, and cancel out the last 12 month payments?
