Ok so I have finally had enough. Sometimes I like to sort by type of file or by date of file and when I do it in Mountain lion it always pisses me off how it then sorts in categories that I have to side scroll through. Any way to get this to be like windows where it still sorts in a vertically scrolling grid? As I recall snow leopard was fine I just want to get that back!

I had the same problem when I switched from Windows. I preferred all folders on top followed by date order. There is a free program called xtrafinder that I use. It's not perfect but it does the job. http://www.trankynam.com/xtrafinder/ Xtrafinder also allows for cutting and paste instead of just copy and paste.

No, there's no loss of function from Snow Leopard. In fact, now you can sort by Kind in Column and List View, which will lump folders together.

Remember that the way it was in Windows was something you learnt to get used to. OS X is different, but you get the best results from learning to use it as it is, rather than as you want it to be.
There are many methods of navigating through folder hierarchies that make the need for separating them out less crucial.

Just in case it will help you or anyone - finder can cut and paste in ML: copy the file as usual, go to wherever you want to move it to and open the "Edit" menu, hold the "Option" key and the "Paste" menu item will be changed to "Move", click on it and the file will move to the desired location instead of being copied

Refresh is Safari is Command R

"Zoom the image icon". Which image icon? You can display icons in the Finder at different sizes in View Options. But that's only for Icon View.
