I'm interested in picking up the new seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm (Season 8) and Breaking Bad (Season 4). They are set to premiere sometime in July. Is there a way to preorder these seasons on iTunes or check how much they would be?

I can't speak on Breaking Bad, but in terms of Curb, you'll be waiting a while. HBO wants you to subscribe to get their shows, their not fans of releasing their content in a timely matter. For example, True Blood season 3 just got released recently on iTunes and DVD/BD, despite the fact that season 4 is about to start shortly. So to answer your question, you won't be able to preorder Curb on iTunes, and won't be able to buy it until well after the season ends.

Wow, that sucks. HBO doesn't have any sort of online service? I don't have cable because I figured I can legally get everything I want via online services like iTunes, official streaming, etc. I really don't want to miss out on Curb.

I looked into this a little bit more. According to this page, season seven of Curb was released on 09/20/09. That is the same date as the televised premiere. If HBO keeps concurrently releasing episodes across multiple platforms, then I'm in luck.

That's showing you the date it aired on TV, not the date it was available in iTunes. I know for a fact that Curb Season 7 wasnt available then because I was looking into buying it. I had mentioned True Blood. Season 3 just became available within the last couple of weeks. But if you look on iTunes, it'll show the date in the same way as Curb, the date it originally aired.

HBO usually releases the previous season of a show about a year after it airs or around the time that the new season is about to start. That allows HBO subscribers to have an exclusive for the additional money they have to spend.

I've often wondered about this. I was waiting for S5 of Dexter to appear but so far it hasn't which is kind of weird as it gets to the point where some people will end up just downloading it from somewhere and that's a potential sale lost.

Thats normal, they usually release the last season to buy just before the new season starts, the fact the new season is starting soon drives sales of the last season as people want to catchup or rewatch before the new season starts, and people then watch the new season having just re-watched the last season.

that makes better business sense than releasing episodes day and date as they are being shown live (or even within the same month or quarter)

remember, it not what we, the consumer want, its what the money men in sales say will bring in the most revenue

The exception is Mad Men, it seems. Each episode of S4 was released onto iTunes a day after its televised broadcast.

Mad Men is on AMC, not HBO. Other studios aren't as restrictive as HBO.

Right, I know that Mad Men is an AMC franchise. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have called it an "exception", but emphasized the difference (and superiority) of AMC's release strategy in comparison to HBO's own strategy.

I've never ordered a season of Breaking Bad on iTunes before but, given that it is also an AMC franchise, I imagine that I won't be let down as far as the timing of the release of episodes is concerned. Too bad about Curb, though.

If it's anything like previous years, new Breaking Bad episodes will be released on iTunes the following day after the original airing... and I can't wait.

I'm sitting here wishing I could give iTunes the money for the whole season of Top Gear 17. But, its not available so all thats left is torrents. What a shame.

I'd never heard of that site before. Interesting things they are doing over there. I'm not sure thats legal where I live but then, most of the really fun stuff in life isn't.
