Is it correct that the "Prevent HDs sleeping" parameter in Energy Saver only applies to the internal drives, not any externals?

That being the case, is there really no permanent way to prevent external drives sleeping other than to install a dedicated app to keep them awake?

The enforced pause while you wait for a drive to spin back up again breaks your flow and can be maddening.

No, it applies to external drives as well. At least, the ones that respect the setting—which not all external drives do.

Also make sure your drive-specific software has its setting to sleep when not in use turned off.
