Hey guys,

Windows user here that just ordered a 27" QuadCore iMac.

Usually on my PC at home, whenever i'm not using it I turn off the monitor but leave the computer itself running most of the time (I run a lot of torrents, VNC, etc).

Is there a way to turn off only the display and keep the computer running like i normally would on the PC?

Thanks in advance and I can't wait!

You don't need an app for that, it's an option under energy saver, you can tell the iMac how long to wait before killing the display and how long until the computer itself sleeps individually.

I personally have Hot Corners enabled in the system preferences so whenever I hold my cursor in the bottom right corner for a second the display goes to sleep. I got the left corner configured to activate dashboard.

Thanks for all the answers but a more in depth Google search (stupid me) showed me that you can turn of the display with a simple Option + Command + Eject key shortcut. Pressing and key or moving the mouse turns it back on.

Thanks guys for your quick responses.

Actually option-cmd-eject sleeps the computer

Shift-ctrl-eject sleeps just the display.

Thanks for the sleep display shortcut!

I needed this, although now that I have the bluetooth trackpad, I use Better Touch Tool and have a 4-finger click sleep the display. 4-finger tap invokes Expose. But the keyboard shortcut is very much helpful, sometimes I want the display to sleep immediately, and I don't like using hot corners.
