Battery life will be no different than it currently is with Push enabled.

Yeah, I would think battery life wouldn't be affected since the iPhone will not have to be constantly fetching for data. Instead, it just has to be receptive to incoming data (sounds kinda passive) and energy will only be used when new data is pushed in.

they're 3 months late, and still no word?

I believe Apple has a target goal, which is confidential, of how many different threads are started on this topic. So, keep starting new threads asking the same question. You never know which one will trigger it being announced.

yeah. I think its kinda like the xbox 360. Its not on when its turned off but it has to still be able to recieve incoming signals from controllers so that it can turn on, right?

I read the release notes and never saw anything about badges/push notification being added yet. But I have two apps, both use it. Rolando and animoto to be exact. Rolando I'm pretty sure doesn't do anything on the internet, it's simply a badge that's posted when you close the app. But animoto's whole app is simply an interface to their web service, all the work is done there. So that leads me to believe they're using push notification for their badge.

Badges have been available all along.

I haven't used animoto, but the question is do badges ever appear spontaneously without having just run the app? I'm guessing the answer is no, which means it does not use Apple's push notification service.

first, get animoto. It's an awesome free app, and alot of fun.

I can't remember if it's ever "spontaneously" updated the badge. Right now my touch is dead so I can't test. But thinking about it more, I don't think it actually does. I don't know.

lt's delayed for one full year

Here's a problem....

Apple wants to avoid another iPocalypse when they release Push Notification feature to the iPhone and iPod touch. So, they are taking one step at a time, and beside, Apple already use push notification on the App Store update on the iPhone and iPod touch.

So, my guess, we have to wait till WWDC 2009 this summer.

That is true. The App Store App uses "push" technology (Apple's App Store remote server telling the App Store app there is an update available), but it also runs in the background. That is, you do not need to have the app opened up to get the badge put on the icon.

I think some people are getting "Push" mixed up with a badge showing up (not you alchemistmuffin). For example, I have a GTD app that puts badges on the icon when things are due (only when you actively open-up the app). This is not due to Push. Nothing is being "pushed" from a remote server to this app. The app is just telling itself that there is something due, so to put a badge on the icon. Background notification would be if this badge showed up all by itself without actually having to open the app.

They should have just shut up about it and never mentioned it. Now they just ignore it...not very smart.

Push would murder battery life probably.

Does the App Store actually display badges without the user having to first open the app? I have always thought they only appear after you open the app and it has a chance to figure out how many updates are available. In that case, it would not be using a push service.

You're correct, it doesn't use any push service.

It is annoying that they touted this as a big deal in the address and since then have not said a single word about it even though it is long past due.

Beejive with push MobileMe is decent enough, but having a real push for im clients and other programs will be very useful, and the sooner the better.

I guess Apple is afraid to part with a tiny slice of the hundreds of millions they are making on the App store to support it. :)

Like the below person said. It's nice to have beejive push to an email address, but this would also be great for other programs. I almost paid for mobileme when my trial was up but the only reason I wanted was the email push feature.

For now I just use yahoo push which works when 74% of time.

I guess it'll come in firmware 10.6
