I am purchasing a iMac just for my self but the rest of the family want there own Computer(This computer is a peace of Junk). I am considering of buying a Mini but I hear of updates and it's dying so I don't know what to do.
I need some help.

Just bought a Mac Mini a couple of months back. Its very much alive =]

I got the slightly more powerful one and maxed out the RAM (the price on the RAM expansion dropped mid order, and the price was automatically adjusted! =]). However if all the family want it for is web browsing, playing music and photo management the cheapest one will most likely be fine for them. Its really small and neat and virtually silent. I love mine. Also, if they ever do outgrow it, there's lots of uses for the mini as its quiet and compact but still packs a punch.

Buy now, your within your 14 day money back period so if they do bring out a new mini, you can return yours, or keep it if you like your one better.

Or just wait till the ninth to save the hassle, or if you don't need it now.

I am looking forward to getting one too. I went to the Apple Store yesterday and the Mac Mini is amazing. I just wish I had a monitor to use one on. I can't wait for the WWDC next week.

What will they be doing on it? Do you have a monitor, keyboard and mouse already that can be used with a mini? If any of them want to play 3D games, you would be better to buy a refurb or second hand iMac.

New mini's next Tuesday on good authority.

It was CONFIRMED months ago that mini's were discontinued and to be replaced with new models on the next Tuesday.

Seriously there are about 50 threads here since the Core 2 Duo minis were released last fall on how the new mini is for sure going to be announced in the next few days. And I am guess there will be a lot more in the upcoming days, weeks, months.

That sounds great! :apple:!!!

WTF? IT'S NOT CONFIRMED IF APPLE DOESN'T CONFIRM IT!!!!! People have been waiting and speculating for months that a new Mini is coming, but there hasn't been a shred of proof from Apple indicating the same thing. Please do us all a favour and go spread your BS somewhere else. Mac Mini was last updated August 7th of last year, and no one professional has made ANY MENTION at all that a new Mini will be announced within the next few days. And, how the %$^& are they discontinued if Apple is still manufacturing both stock and BTO models?

New Mini next week & Hillary will drop out on Friday, will believe both when I see it.

Sarcasm. You fail it. Horribly.

Boy, am I glad I didnt wait until "the new one comes out". I've been hearing that since I bought mine four months ago!

Dont regret it at all, and at this point, dont care if a new one comes out next week. I Love mine, and I got it refurbed.

They will be just doing some basic stuff like Internet, Music, Movies and that's pretty much it. The only reason I'm not considering the refurb is because I Have a budget $2,500 and I'm getting top of the line, the 3.06 GHz. Instead of getting the 2.8 GHz It would be nice for a extra speed bump because I do Final cut pro, Photoshop and other programs like those.

no word on when the new minis will arrive, or if they will simply be discontinued. Nobody knows anything, and nothing is "confirmed."

IMO you'd have to be nuts to buy a mini now. They are 9 months old, and were outdated as of the minute they were upgraded (SR was available and they didn't use it). Paying those prices for 18 month old tech is not smart.

Unless the buyer is willing to overlook the deficiencies in order to get a very small, quiet computer that meets their minimal computing needs, at a lower price than any other Mac.

Just because it doesn't meet your needs doesn't mean no one else will like it.

Come on, it doesn't even have airport n yet. THe mini is the longest running scam ripoff in the computer industry. Its far too old and I am damn surprised apple can still get cpu's from intel for it.

TUAW is reporting support in 10.5.4 (rumored to be released on June 12), for a new piece of Apple "hardware", which they suggest is a "computer". Take it with a grain of salt...but who knows what's coming on Monday?

I do agree, i'm always astonished at the number of people defending Apple against criticism regarding the Mini's current specs.

Right, because everyone who's anyone is using N networks. There's just no possibility that someone would use a 802.11g network, or, gasp, use ethernet!

I do agree, i'm always astonished at the number of people defending Apple against criticism regarding the Mini's current specs.

I'm even more astonished at the number of people who can't look past their own narrow needs, actually read and comprehend other people's ideas, and have an open mind.

Where did I defend Apple? If anything, in many other posts, I've been very critical about the Mini, lack of a headless iMac, and a bunch of other things.

I never said the Mini was a good deal. I said that for some people, the deficiencies of the Mini don't matter as much.

Is the Mini overpriced? Of course!

There's no good reason it doesn't have a dedicated GPU (even a low-end one), along with a whole slew of things for the price.

Does that mean only idiots buy them? Of course not!

If someone wants a small form factor, quiet computer running OS X, without the hassles of a hackintosh, the Mini is the only game in town. Some people will be willing to pay the premium for one. That doesn't make them stupid, insane, etc.

Believe it or not, the Mini is more than fast enough for what most normal people do with their computers. I'm talking general population, not the "I need to have the latest and greatest so I can play COD4 at 50000 fps" geeks that seem all too prevalent on these boards.

Very well said...I'm in the market for one, I really hope Apple continues the Mini and keeps upgrading it.
