I am anxiously waiting for turn by turn software to become available. We all heard that Tom Tom has already written the software. I have a Garmin GPS and I'm a big fan of Garmin products. I'm hoping Garmin writes an interface as well.

Once there is good turn by turn software available, I'm going to give my Garmin to my daughter.

afaik theres been no news about this ever since tom tom said they had software nearly ready to be launched but then retracted any statements that said they were going to release it at all.

i doubt garmin will have anything to do with the iphone seeing as they're trying to push their own smartphone.

all in all this is pretty disappointing. one of the main reasons i got my iphone was because of the tom tom announcement. the google maps iteration just doesn't cut it.

I don't think we'll see any until 2.1 is released. Apple has supposedly enhanced location services to give programs the speed and direction that is being traveled. It's quite possible that gps companies waited for this feature to be included in the SDK so that they wouldn't to make their programs work it out.

There is an agreement by Apple that states that there can't be any GPS apps in the store. It is thought that this is because Apple wants to be the first to create such an app. Tom Tom has said that they are waiting on Apple to make a move which pretty much validates this Apple wants to be first idea. Tom Tom has said that their app is pretty much ready to go and has been tested on the phone and works well, but their hands are tied for now.

Other reasons could be apple not wanting to be sued if you drive into a lake and some others have said it had to do with google map use.

I have no doubt though that 2.1 will bring us turn by turn gps.

Josniack (sp) all but said so.

I also have a Garmin and love it. I can see a lot of room for improvement though, and I would be very interested in an Apple developed GPS turn-by-turn app. I certainly hope we'll see a bunch of these come out close together because I think they will be pretty pricey apps (maybe around $50 I would have to imagine), and I would hate to buy one only to have a better one come out a month later.
