Hi all.....

Anybody having the same issues with iTunes.... it's unusable at present.... just spinning ball and unresponsive.

I have a 1.8TB music library... with over 10 years of custom made, OCD created playlists... I don't wanna take any chances :)

I'm running 10.11.1 on a MacPro 12 Core with 64GB RAM and a 512SSD drive.

My current, non-responsive version of iTunes is 12.3.1.23

People on official Apple iTunes for Mac forums suggesting downgrading to a previous version.... but I'm worried it could all go t*ts up!! :)

1) Open Terminal and type sudo rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app
2) Download & instal iTunes 12.3 http://mac.filehorse.com/download-itunes/5833/
3) Enjoy (and wait for a proper iTunes update)

I have daily TimeMachine backups using my DroboS... but again... so worried trying to fix the issue could cause more issue. I'm on Spotify now 24/7 and all working great, so it's not an urgent issue.

Any advice most welcome.

If current iTunes goes into such unresponsive state, your best bet is finding out the old version, try to restore it to that version, and go to use it. My 2 cents.
I am using El Capitan 10.11.2 beta 2, and it comes with 12.3.1.23, but I don't encounter any such crazy freezes. My machine is a core i5 4GB RAM MacBook Air, way less powerful than your Mac Pro. Too bad to see you have this issue. :(

Thanks Shirasaki for your reply.... I'm glad all is working out well for you. All w as good for me also until I updated iTunes to the latest version.

I'm too nervous to try the suggested fix... I have too much music and too many custom made playlists to risk loosing.

There are 100s / 1000s of people with the same problem all over the Apple iTunes for Mac Forums... I will wait I think... hold out and keep listening to my Spotify!! :) LOVE SPOTIFY!! It just works!!!

You can always backup your 1.8TB iTunes library when possible. :) or, at the very least, backup iTunes library files, which is much much smaller than actual library.

I lived in a while that I needed to rebuild iTunes library once for a couple of weeks. I didn't know why but it would go corrupted for apparently no reason. Every rebuild was a prolong painful experience, and I might have lost some of my music files.

PS: thank you. :) This avatar comes from 大図書館の羊飼い, and I bet your daughter would like it.

Yes
Smart playlists gobble CPU time.
If you've got a lot of those, try turning them dumb, or setting them so they don't auto-update all the time.
You've got a lot of tunes, and each of those smarties has got to go through the entire library to check which songs match its parameters every time you make a change.

Have you tried all your resets first (SMC/PRAM)? Also and it sounds dumb I know, have you let it just sit for while making sure everything its doing is done?

I have the same version without problems. However I don't have the playlist you have nor do I have the amount of media (1.1TB but mostly movies).

Personally if I were you I would move all my media to an external drive (in combination with Time Machine) for safe keeping then try to downgrade if nothing else works for you.

This version of iTunes broke just about everything. Hangs, beachballs, doesn't finish sync and much more.
Completely unusable. Many version of iTunes worked bad with large libraries, but this one tops them all. Every once in a while we se a good build, but this is not the one. Worst ever.
