Anybody else had problems with their Apple RAM?

Hey guys

I was just curious to see if anybody has had problems with the standard memory that comes with a Mac Pro?

My early 2008 Mac Pro just stopped working on me yesterday. It wouldn't go past the fans starting up, didn't even get a chime, just a blinking light on the front.

After reading some stuff online, people were saying it could be due to the RAM.
I have 14gb in my Mac Pro, 2GB standard apple RAM and 12GB of crucial memory.

After testing, it was the Apple memory that was defective, and the Crucial memory was fine!

My Mac Pro has literally been out of warranty for a month, so apple weren't going to pay for it.

It just seems like an awful coincidence that the RAM packs up just after the warranty is due. I had a graphics card failure 2 months ago, and an Apple hard drive failure before that. Are Mac Pro's really not designed to last more than 3 years!! I bought my Mac Pro for the long run!!


I hope I'm the exception, and everyone else's Mac Pro's are working perfectly!


Still, it doesn't beat the problems I had with my old acer laptop, 4 replacements in 2 months !

Got 12 Mac Pro's of various vintages here. Only 1 problem. Mac Pro 1,1 logic board on the fritz lately.

On a serious note, no, electronic failures just happen.

None of our Mac Pro's in the company (2006 and 2008 models) have exhibited any problems with regards to the Apple supplied ram.

The RAM that came with my Mac Pro never got a chance. I pulled it out and replaced it with 16GB from OWC before I ever fired up the computer for the first time in December 2009.

The OWC RAM has been flawless the whole time.

Memory fails. Apple use the biggest suppliers for memory in Samsung and Hynix. There are reports of problems with memory from all vendors. Problems with Apple, OWC and Crucial have all been reported here. At least the Mac Pro has good ways to notify you of memory failures - something many who have posted on these forums think it shouldn't have

All memory fails. I've had three sets of OWC memory go down on me in the last three years ( once a year ) the good thing, they replace it for free. If it was Apple memory I would be SOL.

I ordered higher density modules from Mushkin, sold off the original Apple RAM so I never used it. So far after almost 4 years no issues at all with Mushkin but I've noticed that they stop making them so if any module fails I might be out of luck for replacement even though they offer lifetime warranty also.

And there is really no such thing as 'Apple RAM'. They simply purchase in bulk on a contract basis so the original memory could be any of three or four brands.
