My mom just called me this morning and told me her iPhone died. I bought her one at the same time I got mine at launch and up until now she hasn't had any problems. I watched her do both updates so I know that wasn't the problem an it wasn't hacked at all. She said she was listening to the ipod on it yesterday and then it just died. She told me she tried charging it all night, but doesn't get anything but a black screen now. She says she's tried resetting the phone and also using the power button on top, but is getting nothing. We purchased from an Apple store so we're going to try to get in touch with them, but has anybody had any experience with this? It should be under warranty for a new phone if it IS dead, right?

Yes, it should be under warranty.

However, the store probably won't swap it instantly for a new one any more.

Instead, it'll be "sent in" (code word for sending you a new or refurbished one), while you can rent a loaner for $30 for a couple of days.

As a side note: people are starting to complain about the fact that they might get a refurbished unit back from repair instead of a new one. After all, if they hadn't bought it new to begin with, they could've recently gotten a refurbished unit for $100 less.

Yes, the warranty says new or refurbished is at Apple's discretion. But gee, pay $600 and then a month later, due to Apple's bugs, you suddenly own a refurb? Doesn't seem right.

You're sending them a USED phone... so why is a refurb bad?

You can send them a scratched up phone, and you get a nice shiny one back. Sure the chips inside might have some use on them, but so did the phone that you sent them... I dunno, I just don't have a prob with refurbs. Sometimes I think that they actually have better QC on refurbs than new products.

This has happened to me a couple of times. Told the top button and the home button at the same time for 10 seconds. This will reset the iPhone. Has always worked for me.

It happened to me once. I woke at 3am one morning and for some reason just needed to look at the internet. Since it was dark, I turned the brightness all the way down. Suddenly the screen died. A few hours later, I held the 2 buttons down for about a minute and it magically revived itself. Hasn't repeated thankfully.

I know, it just feels... weird.

Say you bought a new car, and then a month later take it in for service. But they give you back someone else's car that was serviced and cleaned up to look like new.

*shiver*

The brain might say Yes, but my heart says... woof! Can't help it.

And, like I said, if I was okay with a refurb, I'd have bought the $100 less unit to begin with. I know, I know... it's all emotional stuff...
