I'm still amazed at the volunteer work going on down there, and the distances people travel to help. Going to work there is probably some of the best therapy available. It will definitely bring you back to reality.
I'm from Columbus. We're a good 260 miles north of the coast. The
Episcopal Church in Mississippi has played a big part in coordinating efforts all along the coast. You might check out the web site for
Lutheran Episcopal Services in Mississippi for some updates. Also, a friend of mine is the priest at
Christ Episcopal Church in Bay St Louis, which is very close to Waveland. You could email someone through one of those sites to get updates.
While there have been many homes built from the wonderful efforts of people such as yourself, there is plenty more to be done. Most of which consists of the infrastructure of the cities themselves that were completely destroyed. FEMA and local governments are still haggling over new flood zones and the like.
Many of my friends were deeply affected by Katrina. All agree: if it weren't for the faith-based groups and other volunteer agencies, recovery would have been much slower and many more people would have suffered in the short-term and long-term. As a Mississippian, I say thank you!
P.S. Who coordinated your trip? Ask them about any further rebuilding that has occurred. Google!!!
