Hey guys, just wondering if anybody plays DotA (Defense of the Ancients). I'd consider myself a "seasoned" PC gamer, and DotA is one game that I ALWAYS go back to, and 9 times out of 10 I'd rather play DotA than any other game.

For anybody that doesn't know what it is, it's a "mod" for Warcraft 3/FT. I has a pretty steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of it it's wonderful. A bit like chess, in a way, with a lot more action and team play elements.

It's multiplayer. Check out www.getdota.com if you're interested.

For anybody that plays, wanna have a game sometime? I'm shoelessone on battlenet!

Hey shoelessone, I enjoy DotA but am extremely bad at it. Pretty much every time I play, I shame my teammates (which is why I stick to playing with only my friends 99% of the time).

My multiplayer of choice is definitely Enfos, which I strongly suggest any Warcraft lover check out. It's like DotA, but there's no direct PvP element. The lack of direct PvP might make it sound lame (if I tried to explain it, it would come out sounding like Desktop Tower Defense, but with Warcraft), but it actually becomes much more strategic. There are fewer items and fewer heroes, so it's all about good solid play and strategies. I highly recommend it.

Please tell me how can you play Dota on Mac ? I can't even change b-net gateways

Sadly, the latest Battlenet update causes DotA to crash on PowerPC Macs. (It's not the other DotA crashing problem that everyone's talking about: even the safe versions crash on PowerPC).

Blizzard won't help because DotA is "a third party product".

You mean that map for Warcraft 3? I hate that, and it annoys me that half the servers seem to be DOTA. It's just boring.

I play DotA sometimes, but I'm somewhat bad at it, as I don't know any of the good combos/builds for heros.

It's fun, but some people tend to take it way to serious imo.

I started cataloging builds last October. I wanted a quick and easy reference guide at my fingertips (I use Quicksilver to envoke) so I type the hero's name and out pops the build. I've made individual PDF files of each hero and suggested items. It's a continual work in progress. I initially just, off the top of my head, listed items under a hero just to get them down on paper. I've occasionally edited my builds since then.

Of course, depending on the game and how well you collaborate with teammates will dictate your items to a certain extent.

Anyway, here's an example:

yes i do play dota and im extraordinarily good at it any input on how MBP's 13 runs it? Im currently in the process of getting it and wondered how my favorite game would play on it

I just downloaded the mod and am very intimidated by the depth. PM if you want to help a noob :)

Stop referring to DOTA as a game, it's not! All it is is a custom Warcraft 3 map.

Who says a game has to be standalone?

Well with 90 heroes it's not something you can pick up over the weekend.

If you're new to MOBAs I suggest learning Heroes of Newerth instead.

well in that case. How will macbook pros run WC3 TFT, and just as a side note dota will not be a custom map much longer, the creator or actually moderator of the map is developing a stand alone game in conjunction with valve the creators of half life and also counter-strike which was a huge game that also began as a custom map of half life.

That's what I was going to say (about Counterstrike originally just being a mod on Halflife). Just because it is built from Warcraft III doesn't mean it isn't a standalone game.

As for how it will run on a new computer... think about it: Warcraft III is seven years old now. If any new computer doesn't run it flawlessly, that's just depressing. A new Mac will run it beautifully.

Oh god no; I hate DotA. Once i was kicked for not knowing the price of a belt of ogre strength.
A better custom map is SWAT aftermath, anyone else?

DotA OMG is better than dota

depending on the game mode, you can have a 'draft' for abilities or have random abilities set by player 1 (in dm, random abilities changes for every char you get)

It's not a standalone game though, as you have to play it in another game. Therefore, it's just a another map.

i wasn't a big dota fan. i loved me some footmen frenzy though, pretty much was my favorite thing ever. that was all i ever played on battlenet.

Actually WC3 runs awfully on any mac, not because of hardware issues (my 2007 imac gets >100 fps) but because of software issues; for example, it kp's my computer, after 2 hrs of bnet play you have to restart the game, and you can't quit it normally, you need to force quit it.

if they asked you the item price it means they dont want noobs in game(-they will feed and ruin the game) , so join games with noobs only or somthing ;)

www.playdota.com - you can see all hero guides and stuff about dota
www.getdota.com - latest maps

yeah i had a nice laptop pc ... but then we got mac ppc and it sucks at gaming ... i have 1.5gb ram and i can hardly play dota lowest graphics
