Just wondering, otherwise what do you use for quick and basic edits?

If you ever use Preview, how far can you take it, what capabilities are in there?

Cheers :)

Hugh

Confirmed amateur :D

If working with raw then it will likely be the same as you can do with iPhoto.

How quick do the changes need to be?

Is there a reason you don’t want to use LR or Aperture?

For quick one offs I’d suggest PS elements but obviously that’s not quite as free as Preview!

I actually do. For years I didn't realize the capabilities it has.

I used to use Graphic Converter and PS, but lost them both on the laptop when I upgraded to ML. I bought Pixelmator, but really haven't used it much. I have Aperture too, really like it and use it for more intensive editing (or nice pix I want to print).

But for basic color enhancement, cropping or resizing especially to the web, I'll use Preview.

I discovered if I select, then copy and Apple-N for new, I don't even have to paste my selection.

I have iPhoto 11 I think, and really only use it for calendar creation. The calendar app prints way too small for me to read when it's on my cork board.

Coming to think of it I use Preview for cropping all the time!

Never use it on my own shots though. Mostly graphics from the web.

No, I have all the usual tools, but I was hoping to provoke a discussion about Preview's capabilities as a photo editor.
As with the post above, I find it good for a quick crop or to change exposure / highlights / shadows etc. but is there anything more advanced has anyone discovered?

Cheers :)

Hugh

Preview's "capabilities" are extremely limited. I can do the same sort of edits in Lr just as fast, if not faster, and they're non-destructive.

Yeah I love Preview. Its quick and easy. If I need to resize or add text to the photo I usually pop it in there. Also, I like Image Capture for downloading video and photos. I use Preview to take a side by side of images.

If the target is a graphics file where the quality does not matter, such an image foe a scrapbook or email attachment, then quick Preview edits might make sense.

For a serious photo edit I would rather open and edit photos in a purpose built photo editor like Lightroom.

Much has to do with the nature of the graphics file....and the target audience.

I use Preview Edit often, for cropping and minor adjustments to colour and contrast etc of web images and iPad photos. I would definitely like something more powerful, hopefully the new "Photos" will be good, if not then it will be Pixelmator or Acorn.

I had a lot of problems with Preview Edit being very slow and using huge amounts of memory under Mavericks, but those issues went away a few months ago, maybe there was a memory management or graphics bug and Apple finally fixed it.
