I have it, you download their app and connect phone to a tile that you then attach to purse or keys etc.

Very clever.

But, of course, once you use it the app stays running even if you close it, then you get the fun of the usage and standby being the same.

Is there a way to use this device NOT using their app but using keychain?

Why would I need "refresh background" on for this, cant I keep that off and still use it?

I use it. I've got tools on various items and luggage. I haven't found the file so running in the background to be problematic.

Why would it need to be running in the background all the time.
Well, the Bluetooth connection to each time is constant. I imagine it is running because the way time works is that any Tile user's phone can pick up on any other user's lost item.

AT one point when I did close the app it did stop running but I had to close all apps but I know it was the TILE app. There is a very well known problem with the IOS where regardless of apps usage and standby are the same.

This app will by itself be problematic I suppose like WAZE is if you let it have access. I have to change it to "only while using" and I dont ever use "always
because of this.

I was going to go with these tiles but now having second thoughts.

I think you are OK if you close the app after use and check "while using" on the other thing. So far it is OK doing that, I thought there was a way to use the TILE with the keychain on the phone and not using the TILE app so I am looking for that now.

Been using Tile with great results for about 3 years now. Never thought that the app running in the background was an issue. Are you thinking battery drainage or privacy? I think you miss half of the intended use if you only turn on the app the moment you want to look for a Tile.

Example: two weeks ago my wife called and asked me how the app worked (yeah, I’ve told her before) and asked if I could check where her car key was. I checked (she could have done it on her phone) and could confirm that the last place the Tile was connected with the app on her phone was at the hotel she came from earlier in the day. She was riding back home with a friend and didn’t notice the key was gone until she was about to drive home from her friends place.

So she could call the hotel and tell them for certain that the key was there. They found it and promised to send it. Funny thing is, last Friday the Tile community gave me an update on the location. The key is still at the hotel, lazy buggers never sent it:mad: Anyway, none of this would be possible if the app wasn’t running in the background.

With the setting “while using” it will connect to nearby Tiles when you open the app so you can find those. Works well in that way, but it won’t necessarily be accurate about where you left things other places. Just tried it now, brought a key to the store, opened the app (yep, connected and found it), left the key in the car in the garage when I got home and the app now tells me that the key was last connected at the store.

So yes, it works, but you miss out on that last seen feature and still have to look all over the place if the key isn’t nearby when you open the app. Did you actually loose it at the store or at the library or your friends place? And if other people don’t have it running in the background the community find won’t work either.

I'm a chronic tile user. It's saved me from lost keys more times than I'd like to admit. I usually just leave them in a purse or a pocket but can't stand having to search for them. They go on sale around xmas time and you can get packs pretty cheap.
