Is there a demand for a ”regular” 12.9” iPad, for us non-pro user? Im really tempted for a 12.9”-15” iPad just because of the bigger screen. But i’m not interested of paying premium for pro stuff I don’t need. I just want a bigger iPad. ~10” screen just feels too small, just like 3.5” iphone felt too small a while ago.

I really hope Apple is moving towards 13”-15” regular iPads in the near future. IMO it just makes a lot of sense.

iPad Pro 12.9” is more or less Apple’s flagship iPad. It only makes sense for the flagship iPad to get all of those bells and whistles, even if some regular people can never take full advantage of all features. I dunno why Apple wants to introduce a 15” iPad just for the sake of screen. That’s the job of dedicated computer monitors. iPad Pro 12.9”, despite its huge size, is still somewhat portable. 15” iPad Pro will lose its portably completely, making it a sort of dubious products that only a handful of people would be interested.

Well maybe there’s a market for that but Apple have always marketed the bigger version of their products as the pro one. 15 inch MBP, 13 inch iPP, 6.8 inch iPhone 12 PM, etc. I doubt that a non-Pro 12.9 would be that much price competing than the Pro version, as Apple still has to deliver a big screen, a decent processor, etc.

I already find that there’s too many iPads in the linu, maybe they’ll find a way to make it more simple but I doubt that means 13 inch non-pro tablet in near future.

It's an interesting idea, but it probably would cause issues in the product mix regarding feature/price "profit" metrics.

I might be a customer for such a device in a new condition, but normally would look for a currently produced equivalent in refurb or "last year's model" status.

That’s essentially why I recently bought a new 2020 12.9” iPad Pro 128GB that was $300 less than the same storage 2021 M1 device.

My suggestion is to look at the Apple Store for a refurbished iPP. You get a 64GB 2018 12.9” for $629 and the 256GB version is in and out of stock at $709. These have the same one-year warranty as a new one. It still has Pro features, though not the latest processor and XDR screen, but its price is close to the 2020 10.9” iPad Air devices.

I doubt there's a large enough market to divide between non-Pro and Pro 12.9. Besides, at the same storage level, the Air 4 MSRP is just $150 less than the Pro 11.

As @Broadus mentioned, refurbs and discounted older models are a good option if one wishes to limit spending to Air-level. Indeed, the $709 256GB for the refurb 2018 12.9 is cheaper than the $749 256GB Air 4 MSRP and is close to sale pricing.

Right now, 70% of the production cost of the 12.9” iPad Pro is the screen, why put lower spec components into a system for a fractional reduction in cost?

I would love it if one existed. I bought a 2017 iPad Pro 12.9" for my mom, as she liked the iPad but was struggling with the smaller 9.7" size. I bought it refurbished 1 year after it came out, and even then it was like ~1000 canadian dollars.

The new ones? prices are way out to lunch, for just casual users not "Pro" that don't require the fancy screen, pencil, or the "X" processor.

I'm wondering what i'm gonna buy for my mom if hers dies or is no longer supported.

As much as Id like to see cheaper 12.9” non-pro version earliest at fall, I just went and bought the 2021 12.9” Pro version. I figured out that if I decide to wait it could take years, so better just get the newest 12.9” version, be happy with it and wait for the large non-pro version to come hopefully in the future.?

The original point behind the iPad Pro was it was bigger than a normal iPad. So it seemed to make little sense when they started offering smaller versions.

It sounds like they are doing something like this for iPhones next year, with the mini being replaced by a 6.7" non-pro in the lineup, so never say never, but I'm not fully convinced of the need with the iPad. Not unless they decide to pump the prices of the pros even further. The product most in need of this sort of option (IMO) is the MacBook lineup, be it a 15" MacBook Air or a 16" MacBook. I think the 13.3" display size for their laptops is feeling a bit like the 5s in 2013, it's a bit of a relic while the industry has shifted around them. It's a good size for a portability focused device but there should be an option for a full size laptop without breaking the bank over it.
