Anybody's mac just spit out a dirty disc?

So I put a disk into my powerbook to rip to itunes, and apparently it was dirty so my pb just spit it out. has anybody else had this happen?

Never, try setting the itunes "use error correction when reading audio cds" in the importing tab. Under advanced.

Turn off the "Parental Guidelines" option in the Security Preference Pane before inserting dirty disks.

My Powerbook did this to me a few days ago. I tried cleaning the cd, but it still didn't like it. I don't have parental control or iTunes "use error correction when reading discs" turned on. I guess the drive is just a bit sensitive.

Apple computers are very catutious about what is being inserted into them, being it ram or a cd. If it doesnt like it there it will tell you

Yes I have had that too, it swallows it up thinks about it then... thinks about it a bit more before wanting it ejected, or even ejecting it for me....

I had a whole stack of Imation CDs that were rejected. I threw them away and now use only Verbatim or Sony and have not had a problem since.

Not the problem, it's a real CD. no other suggestions have worked either, i guess the disc is just that scratched. oh well.

Yeah, we get those on occasion, but usually they're CD-Rs with those stupid Neato labels on them. cdparanoia or cdda2wav sometimes recovers them, sometimes not.

Sort of. I accidently put one of my wife's country CD's in my G5 Tower and it vomited blood.

I've had it happen with some dirty CDs. But it is also a fairly common failure mode for some of the powerbook superdrives. I've had one superdrive go bad and for a couple of weeks it would reject CDs randomly. Then after a while it would reject all CDs (including blank media, burnt CDs and DVDs and pressed CDs and DVDs).

So you might want to pay attention to your drive over the next month or so to see if the problem becomes worse or whether it is limited to this single CD.

I've found two commercial discs that my PB won't read. One is Metallica's And Justice for All... (at least my copy) and my father's copy of "Count Basie: At the Sands". I have no idea why they don't get read

Ah, there is nothing more annoying than putting a CD/DVD in your machine that it wont read, but continues to try and do so... freezing the Finder for minutes until it decides to give up.

The DVD rental place across the street from my apartment seems to put some sort of sticker on the underside of some of their DVDs, right around the whole in the middle. It isn't covering the readable surface of the disk, but it makes my PowerBook not like them one bit. When I put such a disk in it tries 3 times (if memory serves) to read it, then just spits it out. So far I've been unable to watch both The Assassination (with Sean Penn) and Supersize Me, because of these blasted stickers (so far, the failure rate is 2/5). I think I might send them an email about it actually (as it's an automated affair which are very common in mainland Europe)...

It must have just been a really bad CD, my SD still burns DVDs just fine. Although I do like the spitting out option better then the freezing while trying to rip a messed up CD option.
