Been experimenting with it since Beta 1. I set a sleep schedule, but my schedule is more of a "this is what I would like to do", but my daily routine doesn't always fit. It appears that if you set a bedtime of 10:30pm and a wake time of 6:30am, the sleep tracker will automatically "turn on" at 10:30 regardless of whether you are in bed or not. I thought it was supposed to use the watch sensors to determine if you are actually in bed trying to sleep. It does the same thing in the morning. I "hope" to sleep until 6:30am, but it doesn't happen every day, but the tracker stays on until 6:30 even if I get up at 6. Is this the intended behavior? If so, it doesn't seem very intelligent. It seems to be more of a "track my movements between these time periods, I am in bed", even if you are not. Anyone else figure this out?

since my sleep pattern is all over the place, I just tap the new sleep icon in the control center of the watch when I go to bed, and again when I wake up
Pretty much what I've been doing, but just points out how "dumb" the sleep feature is. It can't recognize when I get up and start moving around and turn it off automatically?

I was excited for this feature but it seems to not be as automatic as I’d like. The sleep schedule is nearly set in stone but each night varies for me. Like someone said you can manually enable Sleep but that defeats the purpose.

Before Sleep I’ve been using AutoSleep and it’s 100% automatic (with the option to manually enable to track how long it takes you to fall asleep). The alarm options are better too with things like smart wake up so it wakes you up in a light sleep state. Apple’s app doesn’t have this and it’s a game changer. Not to mention, AutoSleep shows way more data about quality of sleep.

Apple’s Sleep has a ways to go before it becomes useful for me, however, they mentioned it’s not geared towards advanced users.

As with most new Apple highlighted features, it will take them many incremental updates to get to where they ought to be already. It is rather frustrating at times that many third party apps are already there like Autosleep or Pillow.

Finding it absolutely nonsensical. If you don't go to sleep in the exact prescribed manner of when you set up the schedule then it just doesn't work.

Have to stay up late? Have your iPhone on the desk? Your iPhone thinks you're in bed.
Decide to stay in bed after the scheduled wake time? Nope! You woke up! That's how it is!
Last night I went to be way way early as I didn't sleep well the night before and had to get early for things yesterday. I manually put my Apple Watch into sleep mode. Well apparently I didn't sleep for even a minute despite the fact I slept for over 7 hours.

I'd be as well manually entering the data. They really need to rethink how this works. I'll be going back to Pillow.

I've had no issues with it recognising when I've stayed in bed later, as weekdays it's set that I should wake up at 7:30, but I slept in whacking snooze until 8am and it shows me as getting up at 8:04. It catches all my sleep when I got to bed early and have manually started it on my Apple Watch.

Sounds like your one has been buggy, and should register it as such on the Feedback app, so it can be sorted. Don't forget, it's a beta, not a finished product.

It works better with an Apple watch and it automatic. I set a schedule to wake up 6.30 and sleep at 10.30pm. I get the in bedtimes and time asleep. The sleep is adjusted automatically and it uses data from the phone and watch.

I can imagine just using the phone for sleep may be inaccurate.

My sleep from last night has now appeared, it only took 4 hours! ;)

Ansath,

You may be correct it may be the way I'm dismissing it that is causing it to cancel outright. I guess what I'm saying though is for a feature that's supposed to be used when people are half asleep they could make it a little more streightforward ;)

I used to use Pillow, and that could be hit and miss. There’s nights where I look back to, and still show as ‘awaiting Apple Watch data’. So none are perfect, it seems. Although, Apple’s native one seems reliable, for me.

So you are telling the sleep scheduler that “you aren’t the boss of me”?

That is the way it should be.

Yes the one day all I did was go to the bathroom and it stated it appears I was up and do I want to cancel today's alarm. Another morning I was walking around for like 5+ minutes and it didn't say anything. Same with stand. I can literally barely stand totally and get credit and other time I will need to move around for like 3 minutes for it to register.

On my series 3, I have noticed minimal drain overnight, which is nice to see. I had been getting more drain with Pillow.
Two nights since WatchOS7, I've awakened to a dead watch and another it was 75%. Guess I will have to try the repair since there seems to be no consistency of hand washing or sleep tracking being the culprit

Nailed it. Couldn’t agree more.

After using it for a while, I actually have gotten used to it and like it. My sleep schedule is basically used to turn on Do Not Disturb and I’ll set an alarm when needed. Beyond that, the sleep tracking is fully automatic and you can see advanced data in AutoSleep even if you don’t touch the app. Health records all the data.

I find it works really well. Even if it does go into sleep mode and you haven’t gone to bed yet, if you look at the data in health app it shows that its not recording you as asleep (displays a different shade of blue when you are awake). Obviously if your device is sitting somewhere and not moving this doesn’t work.
