Without Apple's push service what exactly is the point of the application badges on apps that show things like the number of unread RSS Feed articles you have in Gazette/Byline? You need to open the app to update the badge so really what point does it serve except to distract you?

I think the badges are very useful... so far I only get it for mail and app store, and for the app store it's pointless because it doesn't update until you open the updates page like you mentioned, but for mail it's crazy useful.

Mail is different as it does have push available so the badge icon updates without opening the app and hence is useful.
