I purchased Hitchcocks “Psycho” on iTunes ages ago. Watching it again last night, at the end, just as Norman’s face/skull dissolves to Marion’s car being pulled out of the swamp, the picture suddenly minimized into a window at the upper right and I get a full screen ad for some AppleTV show!!!

Thinking it might be a glitch, I skipped to the end credits of another purchased movie. Same thing!

Is this new? I’ve never seen this before. I can deal with this on streaming shows and movies but not on movies I’ve actually purchased!!

This doesn't happen when watching purchased movies using the Apple TV app on a different streaming device (my Sony TV). Only happening so far on my two AppleTV 4k boxes

Yes, and it's an awful idea. I have hundreds of movies purchased from Apple and I don't want them squished into a tiny corner of the screen. It's like watching something on Tubi. Apple has to fix this ASAP.

This is normal during movie credits for films purchased via Apple. Selecting the minimized window will bring it back to full screen.

Ugh, I was hoping it was something new that was maybe a glitch on Apple's side. I usually switch it off during the credits, which is why I've never seen this before. Probably a lot of people do, too, which is why Apple thinks it can get away with it. But it absolutely ruins the theatrical effect, especially with movies that end abruptly like Hitchcock's "Psycho" and "The Birds."

It is something new. This has never happened to me with any of the hundreds of movies I have purchased from Apple until this week. The Home Theater Forum just started a thread on this too. It's one thing to do that on Apple+ streaming programs. It's another to interrupt movies customers have *purchased* just to plug some other product. I think it's an un-Apple thing to do. But that's just me.

Calling them commercials is a bit of a stretch IMO.
From what I’ve seen it’s pretty much what you see on the atv app homescreen which gives recommendations of things to watch over various installed apps that link with Up Next which will of course be different depending on if using an Apple TV or the atv app on a third party device.

Have also noticed it only seems to happen on movies that don’t have a menu selection with iTunes Extras (granted for third party devices that don’t have access to extras then they’ll get it on everything), but then from what I can tell it only minimises within around the last 15-20 seconds of the remaining video file.
All bar the odd exception which I’ve not encountered yet, that for the most part it’s a non issue for many as the vast majority would more than likely backout long before it would be noticed anyway.

Yeah it shouldn't happen so soon at the end of a movie or show, but when it does, just use the rocker buttons on your remote to navigate up to the window with the movie/show and then click on the enter button and the movie window will go back to full screen. Netflix now waits until after the credits before a similar window pops up. Most of the others due it fairly quickly after a movie ends.

Small consolation that it’s not just me but how dare Apple change this without giving us any option to disable? No one asked for this and it’s not even linked to the new tvOS upgrade. Must have been enabled server side.

When you "buy" from Apple (and other streamers), you don't own... only "lifetime lease." Owner controls what can and can't be done with what we- basically- rent. If they decide they want to go beyond this and insert some break points for commercials during the show, nothing stops them from doing that either... or do the disc thing and "force" one to watch a number of commercials/trailers at the start before the movie can begin.

If we don't like what owners- seeking more and more AND MORE profit- may do, don't buy* from them. Buy the disc, rip your own from it and then you are the owner/programmer and can insert ads or not insert ads as you see fit. For profit motivations move 'sellers' to always seek ways to add to "another record quarter." It will only get worse and worse until people stop rewarding such choices... by NOT giving them even more money.

It's unfortunate that they've gone here. More such moves will follow. Anyone unhappy about it needs to stop rewarding such behavior. They notice when money stops flowing. Else, words without interrupting money flow is basically just noise (to them).

Note to self - do not "purchase" any more video content from Apple.

All the more pleased that I upgraded my Bluray player - which works fine without internet - and didnt upgrade my AppleTV HD a couple months back.

Right. The decision-maker will read them and then gauge response:
  • Do what these people want and turn away this easy money?
  • Keep doing what we are doing and making this extra money?
What will modern, "another record quarter..." AAPL choose? (rhetorical- you know). 💰💰💰

And when the time comes to consider putting some commercials or trailers in FRONT of the movie or show to make more revenue, what will modern AAPL choose?

And then when the time comes to consider inserting a few commercials DURING the movie or show to make even more revenue, what will modern AAPL choose?

And why will they choose the same thing each time? Because as much as Apple customers may complain, we go ahead and buy anyway. If AAPL sees a hit to sales because of some decision, the decision will change. Instead, they may see some written complaints, but "another record(s)" keep right on coming.

Vote on things that bug you with your wallet. Lip service has no effect.
