Several times now the preview app stops rendering pdf files. all my pdf files and all pages turned blank several times. It seems using the force quit to quit preview app allows pdf files to again be rendered properly. This is not the first time but the third scare ive had that I lost all the content of my pdf files. There is also a rendering issue occasionally when the pdf is at a ultra low resolution and never clears up making the file unreadable.

Im not really sure what makes all the pdf files turn up as blanks maybe some kind of memory issue? Is anyone else having problems.

I am using the same version of preview. 8.1(877) on a clean install of elcapitan. Not sure why this keeps happening.

I'm having issues with Preview 8.1 (877) viewing PDF's too. Some are fine, others have caused a beachball, once I had a complete OS crash. Today I can repeatedly 'open' to a blank on a particular PDF, no beachball at all. I have a copy of Preview 8.0 (870) as part of an older testing El Capitan instal on another partition. Preview 8.0 opens the same 'blank' file every time.

This has also been happening to me. This is also the first I've been able to find anyone else saying they had it. I think it was definitely brought on by upgrading to El Capitan, since it started pretty much immediately afterwards for me.

Well that at least confirms I am not the only one. However that does not mean apple will fix it.

i am having trouble with everything.
I have been an Apple user since 1986, i am about to get a new computer and if Apple doesn't start fixing things i am going to jump ship.

No problems here. I went through a few hundred PDFs both opening the files and/or using Quick View just yesterday - the files ranged from single-page Letter-size to full-size multi-sheet CAD drawings, located on a USB 3SS DAS and using a 27" external display.

I too have experienced problems viewing *any* PDFs with Preview (v8.1) since upgrading to 10.11. Identical PDF's appear blank via Preview but are fine when viewed in Adobe Reader (v11.0). Hopeless. Screenshot shows same PDF with Adobe (left) and Preview (right).

Personally I just gave up on 10.11, too many issues with Apple`s own software on recent hardware, after numerous clean installs. Next time I will likely revisit 10.11 is when I upgrade my Retina MacBook. If The OS is still unstable then, the new system can go back and I will be getting off this ludicrous OS X update frenzy.

I want stable systems for productivity, the current 12 month cycle only results in a half-baked OS being unleashed onto users. Apple`s obsession with OS X & IOS keeping pace has only resulted in the depreciation of OS X`s quality as a product. I can honestly state that I have had more issue with 10.11 than with any other version of OS X, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, even Android is performing better...

Preview being one of Apple`s own application that simply doesn't work anymore, amongst several. OS X has just become a "work in progress" with Apple still dealing with basic issues on 10.11.2; with a particular emphasis on networking, wi-fi, Mail, Calendar, Graphics, Notes, USB, Photos app, and Spotlight. All these applications should have all been working on day one of 10.11. One could possibly accept this if Apple was dealing with the hardware footprint that Microsoft is compelled to, however on Apple`s own very controlled hardware, they are simply not delivering...
