I think it was pre-iOS 18 where if I didn’t use the settings app for a little while, it would open up to the main screen again. I wish it would still do this because I still find it really frustrating and confusing when I want to open settings and I have to dig myself out of page after page to get back to the main screen.

I wish there were settings for settings so I can tell it to not store the last page I was on indefinitely.

Also I just learned that you can hold down on the back arrow and get a drop down menu to return to any previous screen!

Edit: it’s system wide!!

It was probably getting pushed out of memory. I don't think that was by design.
Regardless of it being by design, I typically wanna open my settings to the main page. In macOS you don’t open settings to the last tab you were on. It would make more sense for an app like settings to open fresh after an hour or so.

Also, I know this is possible because messages doesn’t open to the last person you were texting. It opens to the conversation list after a little while.

Holy hell, yes, I really wish there was a button for "return to top" in Settings. I hate opening it up, wanting to just hit wifi or something, and finding I'm still like 6 levels deep in some other menu.

I did not know about the press-and-hold trick with the back button, so that will certainly help.

I just tried settings, went into subs and haptic then noise (something). Came back out. Saved went straight back in and was at the first page.

I think you’re forcing settings to close by swiping it away in the app switcher screen. This is not a normal way to use your iPhone.

I’m talking about simply going back to the Home Screen or using a different app for a while and then coming back and I’m still in the last place I changed a setting. That’s annoying to me.

Have you been upgrading your iPhone over this time as well? I think @HouseLannister is right that this is just the app staying in memory longer rather than any change to the Settings app itself. I’ve noticed this with Settings moving from a 14PM to the Air. I use Settings so infrequently that it’s been surprising to find it still in the menu I last used.

Started with iOS 18. My phone came with 17. It’s been bugging me for a while but I just dealt with it.

Ahh yes, I was. What’s the correct way to use the phone? I always close most apps. The only ones I leave open are my regulars such as mail, safari and WhatsApp.

You do not close them. There's no reason to do that unless you actively need it - live quickly killing your navigation app to stop it from talking. They go out of their way to offer enormous 12GB of memory in a phone and then you go out of your way to nuke basic settings app or calculator every time you switch away from it... 🤣

Completely with you. In iOS 18 they revamped settings to make everything more nested, which also means pressing the back button several times to get back to the main page. It's really annoying without some central "go home" button but thanks for verifying that the long press thing works system wide. Gonna try it a bunch

You can also long press on the Settings icon as a shortcut depending on what you want to access.
