iPhone 6s running iOS 10.1.1

Every once in awhile I notice emails in my hotmail inbox do not show up on my iPhone (default mail app). The first photo shows my inbox as seen from a browser, and the second is a screenshot from the phone itself. The emails in the red boxes are missing from the iPhone completely - they never showed up. "Mail days to sync" is set to "No Limit" on the iPhone.

If I dis- then re-enable emails for my hotmail emails (or delete and re-add the email profile) on my iPhone the email messages show up, but this is not a long-term solution. The issue will re-occur at some point. Unfortunately, if I don't check email via the browser, I have no idea the emails are missing in the first place which is a HUGE problem.

I've googled this issue but can't find anything online that matches what I'm seeing - hoping y'all can assist. Thanks in advance!

Yeah I had this exact same issue not too long ago. I fixed it by deleting and re-adding my account, but interestingly when I added my account again, I was prompted to sign in through a Safari pop up this time. Maybe that fixed it but I'm not sure, seems to be working fine so far though.

I have issues with hotmail, but not this specific issue. Seems that my mailbox gets out of sync between devices. For example when I delete an email from one device (or browser on a computer), sometimes the email message is not deleted on one of my iOS devices. When I try to delete that same message on the iOS device, I get an error message indicating that message could not be moved to the trash.

The only fix to this is to deactivate mail for my hotmail account and then reactivate it again. This happens daily on my iPad. Very annoying.

I just downloaded the Outlook mail app to try today because I'm getting so frustrated with this bug. It is different, but I'm giving it a whirl.

I'm having the same issue with emails not showing up on my phone but I go to log on the computer and they are there. Idk why some are showing up on my phone and some aren't. They also don't sync when I delete them.

Any updates on this issue?

I switched over to the outlook app for my hotmail accounts. The native iOS email app is unreliable.

I would suggest using the outlook app. The default mail app for ios is doo doo. I only use mail app for my work email.

Sorry to bump this. Been having this issue for a while and it's driving me insane. Can't ever trust I've recieved all my mail. Did anyone manage to find a solution within the stock mail app or is using the OUtlook app as well the only solution?

Thanks.

This is still happening with the Mail app in iOS - for me the issue is that I cannot delete emails that were previously deleted from another device - I get an error message. As far as I can tell, I am getting all of the emails though. It seems to me that the issue occurs more frequently if I read/delete emails from a computer browser.

Regardless, I am no loner using the Mail app on my iPad and am using outlook instead. The great thing about outlook is that it can launch web links into Chrome, which is a huge benefit for me.

I've not found a solution yet, except to use the Outlook app. ☹️

Ok I think I've found a solution for now.

I've spoken to both Microsoft and Apple in detail regarding the issue and it appears it's caused by alterations Microsoft regaularly make in relation to server names.

In order to get round the issue of mail not displaying I was advised not to use the Outlook or Exchange options when setting up a mailbox. Instead use the "other" option and let it populate your mail settings that way.

I've had the exact issue OP describes for years now. Despite re-adding the mailbox countless times I'd never done it any other way than the Outlook option. I usually miss 1/2 emails a day. Since making this change I've not missed an email in 2 weeks. :)

This option doesn't allow me to sync the contacts or calenders and you loose the push functionality. But 1 hour fetch is good enough for me to get round this issue.

Thanks jibber! I'll give this a try! I can live with 1 hour fetch if it means all my emails are there :)

Knock on wood, but things have seemed to stabilize with my outlook.com account, native iOS mail app, and Outlook desktop application. They're all syncing now.

I know that Microsoft switched outlook and hotmail to full MS Exchange accounts and during that process, I had all kinds of issues. In fact, at one point, I couldn't even get my Outlook desktop application to register as a MS Exchange account. I attempted to remove and re-add my email profile on my PC several times, but that never worked. Had to create a new user ID on my PC, then add a new email profile, reinstall all my apps. Also removed two factor authentication. So far, so good.

Do the third party mail Apps like the Outlook App or some other App store password and mail content on their own servers also.
I am told that the third party apps like Outlook are not allowed background refresh by iOS. This forces them to fetch mails remotely to their own servers which in turn sends push notifications to the iPhone.
This mechanism is breach of privacy/ security.
The native mail App of iOS is perhaps the only App which can background refresh and send notifications for new mail received in any folder on the server configured as favorite.
Someone may please correct me.

It's kinda true but regarding specifically the outlook app (made by Microsoft), remember this thread is about hotmail, so the emails are already on Microsoft servers. It's only a potential breach of security/privacy for other accounts, especially work accounts where IT might have a policy against that sort of thing. Microsoft have to store your password to download your work emails for you. But again, no extra concerns if you use outlook and hotmail.

Hi thanks for your explanation. Could you please explain what you mean with "other" option and how I can set it up to solve the issue? Thanks in advance.
