Just got an AppleTV yesterday. It has been updated to the newest software. For some reason I cannot get video to play through Airplay. I did get it to do one movie trailer through the imbd app. Now it won't do it again. Even using Home Share I can here the audio but the video never shows up. Any suggestions? I do have an iPad2. I can do my photo's.

I know AirPlay still buggy, photos and YouTube play ok,videos not or in my iPod app the AirPlay icon is missing ,iheartradio don't work (suppose to have AirPlay). Still a lot of work to do by developers and apple.
If you reboot atv or iPhone sometimes corrects itself but just for a few minutes.

I do notice that it will work directly from my desktop. I can play a movie in iTunes and select Airplay and it will work. Seems to be mostly a problem with the IOS devices.

I had been able to stream video from vlc on my iPad, but now I can only stream sound. Some Internet videos stream, but not others. I have the latest firmware. Everything had been working fine until today.

I was having a lot of trouble getting it to work. What fixed it for me was to update it then do a reset. It'll reset to out-of-the-box, but with the new software version.

This.

This is still young tech, so it's still very buggy, it'll mature in a few months.

There are very, very few web sites that are enabled for AirPlay video. In fact, about the only site you can depend upon is apple.com and even there it may not work on every page or video. Some sites will appear to work, or work only intermittently but that's probably because there is "bug" (or feature) in AirPlay that sometimes allows AirPlay to work (temporarily) on a second web site after you have visited and use AirPlay on a site that does support the technology.

As for apps, third-parties have to enable AirPlay with new versions of their apps or video won't work. There are a small handful of third-party apps that have been updated for AirPlay video but in my experience the only apps that work nearly all the time are those that were released by Apple (iPod app, Videos app, Photos app, Youtube app).

It's also been reported that AirPlay may work more reliably if you first use AirPlay on one of Apple's own apps and then switch to the third-party app which you want to use. In fact, this latter "trick" may allow apps that haven't been updated for AirPlay to work with video for a short period of time (like the first video you play).

I attribute this general unpredictability and confusion about AirPlay video to the following:

1.) Very few apps have been updated for AirPlay video and even fewer web sites support AirPlay.

2.) There appears to be a "bug" or feature that may allow a web site or app to work temporarily if you first use AirPlay at apple.com or with one of Apple's own apps.

3.) Third-party apps that have different versions for the iPhone and iPad may work on one device but not the other. This happens because the version that runs on the iPhone/iPod touch may be newer than the version for the iPad (or vice versa). This appears to be the case in the PBS app for the iPhone versus the PBS app for the iPad. <update>The PBS app for the iPad was recently updated to include support for AirPlay video, thus both versions of the PBS app now work with AirPlay.

4.) On web sites, each instance of a video has to be explicitly enabled for AirPlay which means that on any given web site some videos may work while others may not. The same may be true for internet-enabled, streaming video apps or apps in general if the content creator wants to enable or disable AirPlay on a case-by-case basis.

5.) The AirPlay technology may have bugs and some of the third-party apps that do support AirPlay video may themselves also have bugs. Furthermore, there may be some misbehaving apps which after use may cause AirPlay to fail for other clients/apps (this is my own suspicion, however, I can't confirm that it is actually true). If the latter is happening you may need to power cycle you're iOS device in order to get AirPlay to work again.

The net result from the above is that AirPlay is "...like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." Again, the only exception might be with the several apps from Apple which do seem to work pretty reliably.

As for third-party apps, a few do seem to work well but the mix even among those that claim to support AirPlay video seems to be about 50/50 (i.e. 50% work, the other 50% even when claiming to have been updated for AirPlay video only work intermittently -- for whatever reason, see above). There are lists here on MacRumors and elsewhere which claim to report the apps that have been updated for AirPlay video, but I wouldn't depend upon them completely as some apps that do work aren't on those lists, while others may not work very well even after you find claims from other users who say it works for them. Generally speaking, if the third-party app in question had its last update sometime before March 2011 then it probably won't work with AirPlay video.
