So I've been looking to buy some new headphones (either APP2s, AirPods Max or something else) as well as a new iPhone for the last few months, but with iPhone changing to USB-C in September and the rumours of an updated APP2 charging case with USB-C soon, does anyone else feel reluctant to upgrade?

I already have a MacBook Air M2 (with USB-C MagSafe charging).

If I buy APP2s or AirPods Max now, and/or an iPhone, they'll be my only device with Lightning.

Kinda annoying that Apple seems to be delaying updating certain products, it would be so much more convenient just to have one charger type for all devices.

This applies even more to AirPods Max 2 - no solid rumours at all. I'd happily pay out for a brand new set right now if they had USB-C.

So I'm kinda stuck - upgrade now and have Lightning and USB-C devices for the next few years, or wait until Apple updates iPhone to USB-C (September) and AirPods Pro 2 to USB-C (I'm guessing by the end of the year).

Anyone else in the same position?

Anyone else just not caring and bought an iPhone or AirPods recently knowing the change to USB-C is relatively soon?

I just bought a iPhone 14 Pro Max and AirPods Pro 2 within the past 3 weeks. Not really an issue when both my plug-based devices have the same port. But beside that, the MagSafe charging makes the port less relevant anyway. I actually have only charged my AirPods case on the Apple Watch charger, not with a plug. I think the MagSafe is kind of the "way of the future" anyway, and it's more convenient if you have the hardware to charge that way.

No, I have a 12 Pro Max that i'll be keeping for at least another year so I'm going to need to use lightning until I upgrade. I just bought my first airpods (after my sony earphones broke).

You can buy Magsafe case for an extra charging option (it's only an extra £10/$10 i think). Even if you don't want to use lightning you can use magsafe. a magsafe cable will work on my iphone 12, todays airpods, the iphone 15, 16, 17, etc. like @ultra16 says it seems Magsafe is going to be the the future. At some point apple might even remove USB-C ports from iPhone. There have been rumors. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few years they actually do it.

In 1-2 years when i upgrade then it's not going to be a hassle to use a lightning cable to charge the airpods. I mean, everyone except Apple has moved onto USB-C and i'm having to use lightning when every other device is USB-C. in about 2 years the battery will probably be worn out and applecare will run out so it'll be about time to buy new airpods.

Stop worrying about it and buy things you need now. I could sit about worrying about not having USB-C airpods but it doesn't seem like we're going to be getting usb-c airpods until well into next year or even 2025.

I wouldn’t buy a non USB-C device now. I haven’t for several years - I travelled a lot with work and taking as few cables as possible was a plus. I have a MBA M1/IPP/BFP/MBP - all USB-C that I use the MBP USB-C charger with. An AW - USB-C to puck and then iPhone 13 pro with USB-C to Lightning.

Can’t wait for the iPhone to be USB-C!!! One less cable. Even sitting here typing this on my IPP I can unplug it, charge up BFP or MBA, if I want to charge any of them from the MBA I have the correct cable - no need to search, same if I wanted a cabled connection between MBA - IPP etc.

It’s not that I have anything against Lightning connector - it’s just I want ONE connector for all devices which IS possible.

Magsafe charging is the future anyway. But i have lightning cables regardless from previous devices so i'm not fussed.

But if its a big deal to you then by all means wait. There'll be sales towards the end of the year anyway so maybe wait for Black Friday or Holiday sales by which point you'll know what the USB C status is

I also already use MagSafe for both iPhone and AirPods so the change won’t affect me at all. But in general - New devices have USB-C, let’s get it over with.

I was planning to get a 14 Pro however once I heard the 15 is moving to USB C, I decided to wait another year. That way I only need to carry a USB C charger and cable for my MacBook, my iPad and iPhone.

Are there any viable rumors that any new features will be added along with USBC, or will it just be USBC?

SE Penna.
I’m in the need for new AirPods 2 but wary about issues like the Gen1 had. I had them replaced 4 times and I don’t what that hassle again. I do like the Apple eco integration with them.

I bought my Pro2s on day one and haven’t had any trouble at all with them. I had my Pro1s replaced twice, and they’re perfect now, too.

Definitely not buying anything new with lightning. I even bought a new Apple TV just because the remote has USB-C now, lol

APP I can understand as you carry them with you all the time. Why would an ATV make a diff if it has a C type or lightning? You already have a lightning cable for your iPhone at home and you only plug it in once every couple months is all.

I just hate having different cables, when i know i could just have one for everything.
I have a USB-C cable leading to my couch, that i use for the Macbook, Switch Controller, Headset, Kindle, etc. It is just much easier if i can just plug that into the remote as well, instead of searching for a lightning cable or unplugging the MagSafe charger in the bedroom (and then the remote is out of reach).

Honestly just "knowing" that there is a better way than getting out a different cable, makes me hate lightning. Even if it is not that much trouble. lol

I'm also annoyed by the Eve Room for the same reason. (that one is even worse, uses MicroUSB, yuck)
Battery doesn't hold long anymore, but i'm not gonna buy a new one until they switch to USB-C.
