Anyone else noticed this behavior? Clicking on an address bar, selecting links on a webpage, basically in a lot of areas of the OS it seems initial clicks get ignored and you end up having to click twice.

One click works fine for me. Are you using a screen protector?
Yes, I have a screen protector. Thing is, I see the screen change, meaning it noticed me touch it. I just end up having to touch it again to get it to actually do anything.

Maybe it's not registering the touch in the correct spot.

The only time I have link issues is when the WiFi isn't connected right. So, I have to turn the WiFi Off/On.

I also have screen protector and I’ve noticed the typing is getting worse on my phone. When I give kind of a firm press throughout the screen protector it seems like the typing gets better again (and touch sensitivity in general), but eventually wares off and needs another press shortly after.

I’m using the cheap Walmart Onn brand ones btw..

No trouble here on iPhone X with a tempered glass screen protector.

BTW, I dropped an iPad with the same brand screen protector on it. I thought the screen was a goner but the screen protector took the hit and saved the screen underneath. Needless to say, those are on all of my devices now!
(And pardon the pitch - I'm not connected in any way with the manufacturer, just a very happy user.)

Iphone X
iOS 14.5.1
amFilm tempered glass screen-protector.

I have had this happen recently, first touch clearly “registers” as a touch (underlined link becomes darker or some subtle change in color etc) but I need to touch again to get the action to “take”. On Air4 UTD OS

I get this sometimes. My fingers don't work well with conductive touchscreens (not just iPhones etc) and I have always assumed that the device doesn't think I pressed on the area hard enough to activate the action.

It could be a few different things beyond a screen protector:

• How long you hold — especially with Force Touch gone, more actions include a long press gesture/action in addition to tap. Perhaps you’re holding long enough for iOS to ignore your touch as a tap but not long enough for the context menu to be triggered. Basically, iOS could be, “I’m not certain as to what the user is trying to do here."
• The way you tap — maybe you slide or roll your finger a little, imitating a different action, somewhat similar to the previous point. I realize this seems unlikely as you’d think it would be constant. However, you very well could tap differently for the next instances (i.e., now frustrated)
• (Relating to a Web browser) Temporary connection problem — Your first request to go to the link times out but the next succeeds, which can appear as as a non recognized tap or click (I’ve had it happen on desktops as well) *** Less probable but still possible cause

A consistent way to demonstrate this is going to YouTube.com (not the app). Once you’re playing a video the site shows recommended links/videos on the right. Tapping one of those always requires TWO taps. The first one you can see it register but nothing happens, and when you hit it again it goes to that video.

And, I’ll add, this happens on both my iPad Pro 10.5 and my new M1 12.9 1TB.

What about a desktop or laptop on the same network? I ask because, if strictly related to Web browsers and the like, the problem could also be laggy DNS servers.

Desktops on the same network don’t exhibit the issue. Just tested on a Windows PC.

Does no one else see this using YouTube.com on their iPad?

I tested YouTube.com on my iPad and did see similar behavior except…

For me, the first tap’s result is overlooked easily, though it does something. On the edge of the video thumbnail — very poor design choice IMO — appear two icons, add to queue and add to playlist.

It is only when these options are active the second tap on the video listing redirects the browser to the video’s page. Again, not a great design choice. I realize the Web version of YouTube can’t use long tap for their functions (that applies to the Web browser) and YT didn’t want to take up more space in the preview list, however, I think, they still chose the wrong avenue.

Anyway, perhaps this solves your mystery.

Hmmm that is interesting. I don’t see those items pop up but maybe they’re hidden and that’s actually what’s happening? I see it in other apps/areas too but this was an easily-repeated one. I’ll poke in the YouTube settings and see if I can activate those so I at least see them.

It happens to me too rn and I ve just got this phone for less than a month by now (iphone 12). It happens to me not only in browser but almost everywhere when I press the top of the screen to go back. When I wait like 1 second before I press “<back” it doesn’t happen but it’s annoying to wait everytime before doing a basic task on a 1k dollar phone…

Yes, I am! I have that happen quite often on my iPad Air 2020, but not on my other devices. I do NOT have a screen film on it, just the bare glass it came with. I also see some strange things occur when trying to select text and when I do other touch operations, so maybe they screwed up the screen sensitivity on my model. It is really annoying. It also is flaky on displaying the keyboard.
