I really want to get the new iMac 27" with 2TB and 256GB SSD. I see that they are shipping in 4-6 weeks. Do you think that the times will be cut by the time the back to school program (free base model iPod touch) is announced (hopefully in 4-6 weeks). Also do you think we will get an official date on OSX Lion on WWDC? Usually when they announce a release date, they offer OSX Lion as a free upgrade when you purchase a new mac. So i am guessing the best time to buy is to see if they have an announcement at WWDC on the release date of Lion and hopefully the back to school program is up and running. The student discounts are nothing spectacular right now. ($100 off and a little bit cheaper upgrades)

Back-to-School Programs started May 25, 2010 and May 27, 2009, so I would think it's a safe bet that waiting until May 24 or May 31 could get you a free iPod Touch and maybe a free Lion upgrade.

Same here, I don't need an iPod but getting a free one and selling it could help finance the actual machine I'm getting. Can't wait :)

YEP going to wait for the free iPod and take advantage of the student discount
...gonna get the 21.5 inch with the 6770M and 1tb hd ...then going to upgrade more ram on my own a little later.

you guys all have old IDs? Or actual students still?

Yup, I was initially just waiting for the promotion. But since WWDC is a week or two after the promotion begins, what's a little longer at that point? At the very least, I can find out what the word about Lion will be even if it doesn't ship during or shortly after WWDC.

Sort of... I'm waiting for the redesign, which usually comes right after the back to school promo ends.

The iMac was just updated this morning and you're all ready waiting for the next update, complete with a redesign? Seriously!?!?!

What makes you think that Apple will redesign the iMac in the fall? The current design has been around since the 2009 version, which was just a year and change ago. Apple will probably not refresh or even redesign the iMac in so little time. To be realistic, you will be waiting until next year for that redesign, if it happens. Good luck on that.

Well, I was only going to wait until the Back-to-School Promotion but now I'll wait until WDCC, as well.

Well I guess I'm out of the know..anyone care to PM me details?

I believe he is suggest that rarely if ever does Apple check if you are actually in a school that you use their discount online.

In store, they normal ask for an ID

As for waiting, I do think it makes more sense to wait for a free upgrade to Lion, but my office can get me a copy for free, plus I'd need to get an upgrade for my MacBook Air, and I assume the Lion upgrade is specific to the iMac. But really, the office is the main reason I want to pull the trigger as soon as the back to school promo comes out. And the Mac Minis, thats something I want to see. Maybe save some cash by using two displays I own. Although 27'' can support those two plus its own, which is quite a bit more room. We'll see

I flashed my old (we're talking a few years) college ID to the Apple store rep., he took a quick glance at it, and said, OK, and processed my Pro with the student discount.

If I understand correctly, online, there isn't even a checking system... however, people have reported that Apple has asked them to provide additional proof later on. I believe this is a random checklist.

The risks for "tricking" Apple are small, but there are risks regardless.

And I'm also waiting for the free iPod promotion. Unfortunately, we still have to pay a little bit, as I understand it, it's a 200 dollar rebate, but the price of the lowest end iPod comes out to almost 250 after taxes. A 50 dollar iPod is still cool. Or do I have this completely wrong?

From what I have read, Apple does from time to time do audits of online Education Pricing purchases. Honestly though, it's too easy to legitimately get the discount then to play games with Apple. You just have to play games with a school! :D

Last time I did the IPOD promo the rebate was for the full cost of the IPOD.

It's been a while since I did that though. I think it was 2nd Gen IPOD Touch.

yeah, it should be out by june right? that's what i plan to do. wait it out and see what lion brings.

They will make an announcement at the beginning of June. Hopefully it releases soon afterthat, but it could be months.

I have two ipod touch, iphone 4, and my ipad 2 is schedule to come tomorrow. So waiting for another ipod isn't worth it for me. Though I was under the impress that those who buy imac 2011 refresh were getting the lion upgrade for free. Is that not the case? If not is the Mac OS X Lion expensive. If so maybe I should wait it out.

Can anyone remind me - if Apple announce Lion at WWDC this usually translates that any iMac order PLACED AFTER the announcement should get the OS upgrade at a reduced rate (vaguely remember £10-£15 UK Sterling). Is this different if they announce in June but don't actually release Lion until September / October? Also, what of orders placed prior to the announcement but not delivered until after the announcement?

Good questions.
