It's becoming a pretty popular standard. I am hoping for HDMI in and out on the next iMac, just so I can hook up my PS3 and mirror my iMac on my TV. I know that you can do the same with DVI and the optical audio out, but still, less cable clutter is always something Apple should be going for.

i dont think they would do that and get rid of the optical audio...that would leave alot of audio/music/video people in the dust which would not be smart.

if anything, they would probably keep the optical audio and add HDMI to replace the DVI system

Agreed. HDMI->DVI adaptors are pretty easy to find for people who would still want them.

The downside of this approach is that it leaves VGA/analog (S-video) users out in the cold. The DVI connector can carry both digitial and analog, while the HDMI connector only carries digital audio & video.

HDMI + miniVGA? doubt it.

Blah. Wouldn't want an analog output on my machine anyhow.

Would love HDMI in/out on Cinema Displays. :)

But, since they never do any real updates to that product line, launched 3 (!) years ago, this is probably just wishful thinking on my part... :(
