i plan on buying one of those to put my external hdds on .. it can hold up to 5lbs .. and ive seen some pics of it holding a wd my book 4tb

I got this shelf and it works fine. I'm sure you can do it yourself, but it's convenient to have the parts already figured out. Since the iMac stand is at a slight angle, the platform (shelf) has to follow the same angle.

I'll do you one better - here's a pattern!

I'll give you the ultimate hook-up. Here's a pattern to do it yourself (provided you don't make it, knock it off, sell it, yada-yada - it's patented). Just cut this basic pattern out of a heavy-gauge sheet of steel, make the appropriate bends and you're done. I'll tell you though, it's not as easy as it seems. Make sure you make your iMac clips the exact width of your stand (every one is different by .5 mm). Make sure you coat the inside of the clips (so they don't scratch your iMac). And pay special attention to the width between either side of the clips (that determines the height the shelf will set at). Or... go down to your local Apple Store or Best Buy and buy one for 29.99.

Here's the pattern: http://blog.twelvesouth.com/backpack/backpack-origins/
