The beauty of the activation process was that it only took me 10 minutes, on the 4th of July no less, and it handled cancelling my Verizon contract. So that means I didnt have to worry about calling them only to have a huge sales pitch be thrown at me for me to stay with them.

Well I got a call from Verizon today, at work of course. They wanted some feedback on why I cancelled my account. This is how the convo went:

V-Rep: We've noticed that you've cancelled your account. May I ask why you decided to cancel your contract after such a long history of being with Verizon?

Me: Well, I wanted to get an iPhone and that meant switching carriers.

V-Rep: How do you feel about the iPhone so far? And has it lived up to your expectations?

Me: It has exceeded my expectations and has been wonderful to use since the day I bought it.

V-Rep: What would you say you like best about it?

Me: Well the user interface is gorgeous, everything is just so graphically pleasing that it makes it fun to use the phone.

I can use Google Maps to search for a restaurant or store and have it give me directions and offer to call the number. No more 411 charges.

I can view actual webpages like I do on my desktop.

I can view my voicemails in a digital list format rather than calling my phone and going through voice prompts.

V-Rep: Is there anything we could offer you to come back to Verizon?

Me: You could offer me a free phone and free service and I wouldnt come back. The service was always great, its just that I wanted an iPhone and love using it now.

V-Rep: So you are saying that the only way you would come back to Verizon is if we offered the iPhone?

Me: Yep

V-Rep: Well thank you for your time, have a nice day.

Me: Your welcome, you too. Bye

With any phone, I have noticed theres still a small clicking sound coming from just the way a cell phone network is set up. I do not know how this is generated, whether its from the mic or not, I am no radio engineer ;)

I got a call too. The rep said he could save me "a lot of money" on my bill to bring me back. I listened figuring a phone upgrade (I wasn't far from when they would do it anyways) or some temporary package discount or something. The extent of the offer was if I added a text messaging package I could save an average of $1.15 per month. Needless to say I didn't bite.

I forwarded that conversation on to a colleague of mine who works for Verizon Business.

He's a big fan of the iPhone, of Apple and he is of the opinion that Verizon made a huge mistake by snubbing Apple.

According to him, Verizon is in massive FUD mode trying desperately to compensate for what they know but refuse to publicly admit was a strategic blunder.

Yep, because of that, sometime in mid-2008 I will absolutely bolt from Verizon to AT&T, for the sole reason that I want the iPhone.

If Verizon can somehow magically get Apple to break the exclusive contract with AT&T, they better do it before mid-2008.

I know several other people who are doing the same. Verizon is facing huge losses because of this.

Considering most of the media outlets were saying that T-Mobile and Sprint would be hurt most by AT&T offering the iPhone, this was interesting to read:

"When I was in line on friday the majority of people in the 300+ line were using verizon phones. The most popular of the phones was the Treo which suprised the heck out of me. I didn't see many fellow sprint users in line so I don't think Sprint has much to worry about as long as they keep offering SERO plans. Verizon on the other hand will definitley be feeling some pain this week and AT&T should have no problem maintaining the largest US carrier status."

That was taken from post #176 (page 12) of this thread from a sprint users forum. BTW, it's a VERY entertaining thread to read!!

How long does ATT have exclusivity on the iphone? I assume it's more than the normal 90 days?

Also this full iPhone is on the contract, but couldn't' possibly like an iPhone nano be on another carrier? Maybe not, but maybe so.

I could imagine an iTunes & phone product by Apple that is even smaller could be popular, passing on the safari and mail features.

I would be willing to bet that the contract is not just exclusive to this particular phone but to any phone Apple produces. With existing phone manufacturers, it would be pretty hard to draft a contract that prevented them from selling a really similar product to another carrier -- but with a brand new manufacturer that has never created another phone, it would be pretty easy to draft such a contract.

Verizon Is So Stupid

I have a family plan with verizon that is currently on a month to month (because I passed the 2 year contract date). I was told that if I remove one of the phones (because I'm buying an iPhone) then the other remaining phone's plan will be changed and locked into a new 1 year contract! I guess any changes you make to a plan renews your contract from that date.

So, If I don't want to lock my other phone into Verizon for a year, I have to switch both phones to AT&T and they will lose not only 1 but 2 customers.

I guess AT&T is getting both of our accounts!!

The funny part is that Verizon had the audacity to go on the offensive after making a business blunder by going public and claiming that it was Verizon that rejected Apple, not the other way round, and went on to criticize Apple and the iPhone as not being viable.

Verizon should have kept its mouth shut after making this huge mistake and kept a low profile -- like T-Mobile and Sprint.

What a bunch of clowns. So now they know -- never bet against Apple and Steve Jobs.

For anyone who cancelled with verizon, how was the process? I want to cancel my service and transfer my number and want to know how easy/difficult it is.

I would also like to know, mainly about the cancellation.. I didn't try to have my number ported over because I didn't want my contract terminated right away.

When I did it, I never even spoke to Verizon at all. The activitaion process on iTunes will cancel your account with Verizon and switch your number over to AT&T. Took me 10 minutes start to finish.

Even funnier since Verizon had 1st crack at it.

iPhone shuffle!

The only iPhone Verizon will be getting is the iPhone shuffle which will randomly call people and ask "Can you hear me now?"

Also this full iPhone is on the contract, but couldn't' possibly like an iPhone nano be on another carrier? Maybe not, but maybe so.

I am a fellow Verizon switcher. I loved VZW to death, had amazing service.

I initially wasn't going to bother with the iPhone until next year, but after playing with one at the Apple store I was sold. I always despised ATT (formerly Cingular) because of their shotty service.

In that case, activation took 5-10 mins. No snags whatsoever. The iPhone works like a champ and nobody has noticed I switched carriers.... yet.

I haven't gotten a phone call from a VZW rep yet, but I'm kinda hoping that I do. I do want to blast them for passing on the iPhone as it's one of the biggest mistakes in cell phone history. I can only imagine how many subscribers they have lost so far and the more that come.

Speaking of service, I am very surprised about it! I get full service in my house (5/5 bars) as compared to VZW (2/5). The EDGE network isn't as bad as I thought it'd be, I've been hitting close to 300kbps with it. The only gripe I have is that I wish they had unlimited Night/Weekends for the 450 min plan. I don't feel like dumping another $20 to get it. It should be a standard feature on all plans.

So far very happy iPhone user and ATT customer (never thought I'd say that :p )
