If so is the screen on the iPad 8th gen much worse?

I don't use true tone so not worried about that...

I still have the 9.7 Pro and my wife has the 8th gen. I've not used hers extensive and haven't watched video on it, but when I've looked at hers I've not noticed much difference. The 8th generation iPad is a really nice device for the money.

Depends. 8th gen doesn't have the laminated display. For some, that's a deal breaker. Personally, I think it looks fine.

My wife has the 8th Gen, I have a 9.7 pro with a semi-shot battery. The screen on hers is larger but as noted not laminated. I only notice on direct comparison, you get used to whatever you spend time using. Her iPad is definitely faster and more pleasant to navigate, mine is showing the limitations of it's old processor and limited RAM. The only area I find my old pro trumps it is in sound quality. The pro speakers setup is superior.

After going round in circles I have finally decided that I am going to replace my 9.7 pro with either a gen 8 128g size or a mini 5 with 64g. This is based on budget. Also I like the older design with touch ID and a headphone jack.

I tried a refurbed 10.5 inch pro from Apple but it came with a white spot so I've gone off that idea.

Also nervous about the white spot issue maybe being a problem on the air 3.

So to sacrifice screen quality, or size! I'm used to the 9.7 inch size but also used to a laminated screen and I can't decide which way to go!

I know I could wait but realistically my current one is about to run out of space and I need it for work.

I use split screen quite a bit, along with the pencil, but had a mini 2 some years back so I know I can handle that.

As I say, tough decision!
