Anyone have an LG Int. BD drive Installed?

I'm looking at the LG WH10LS30K (Newegg Prod. Page Link). Does anyone have this model in their 2nd optical drive bay? I'm considering this as an alternative to a vanilla DVD+-R super drive but would love some user feedback. OWC sells this model which is why I'm looking at this particular model, but if you can recommend another that is better I'm all eyes.

I'm a couple weeks away from buying an internal BD-R from OWC myself. I was just going to pick one of the "Mac Pro kit" offerings in LG flavor, without Toast, since I have Encore, and run with it, but I'll see if someone offers up a better unit in this thread...

Any unit will work (SATA drive to a SATA controller, IDE drive to IDE controller).

It's just that under OS X, you can only use it for data/content you created yourself (no DRM), not watching a BD movie you buy off of the shelf (Apple won't license BD, so they can't include the necessary support to OS X - has to do with the DRM requirements).

It will work fine under Windows though.

I installed an lg dvd drive into my mac pro, and it had problems sleeping. It would try to randomly read discs every 4-5 mins so the pro would never sleep. Just to be aware not all drives work, especially when a blu ray drive is expensive.

I only plan to use it to burn discs of the films I make, since I don't own or watch any Blu-Ray stuff yet, so it's probably perfect for me. And I think they're ~$200... pretty cheap!

Did you try upgrading the drive's firmware?

Just asking, as sleep problems like that (power management issues) are usually solvable via firmware. Of course, not all drive makers are all that good about it (for BD it seems more of a necessity though, so users can upgrade the firmware for disk/drive interaction issues).

I don't have that particular model, but I do have an LG-GGW H20L. Works well and is quite reliable (no BD coasters yet). Of course, BD-Rs are shockingly affordable now - you can get them at $1/disc. Much faster than anybody expected.

I'm curious about this as well. The OWC version has the model number WH10LS30KMP, but the one more commonly seen has the model number WH10LS30K. Since the OWC version is $150 versus about $100 for the regular version, I would like to know if they are the same drive and OWC is just changing the model number to confuse us. I seriously doubt that there are two different versions of the drive made by LG - one for PC and one for Mac.

My gut feeling is that they are the same drive and I'd rather not pay $50 more for the same thing.

Has anyone tried the regular model number WH10LS30K LG drive internally on a Mac Pro? Thanks...

My LG BH10LS30 has some sleep issues (wakes up and noisily scans for discs). So far, it seems the firmware it came with is still the latest (v1.00_6). I tried flashing it to a WH10LS30, same version, which worked fine but unfortunately did nothing for the sleep problem.

Hope this will be resolved in a future update.

Edit: just to clarify, mine's a '10 hex Mac Pro.

I have the LG 10x Mac Pro kit Blu-ray burner from OWC in my '09 Mac Pro. It burns beautifully, allows sleep without any problems, and required no drivers or anything to install. I put it inside and it worked. It's the $150 one.

Don't buy the MCE drives, they are a ripoff because all they do is buy some OEM drive like a Pioneer one and rebrand it as their own. They don't make any drives themselves. "Work perfectly" is not really necessarily true for them either.

I would go with the LG 10x Blu-ray burner, if you have sleep issues then just return it and buy a different drive.

Hello, I am interested in this product LGEWH10LS30KMP as well from OWC. It's the 149$ deal. Could you please explain what exactly is the mac pro kit and why I need it ? I live in Greece and I could buy it here but without the mac pro kit. Should I have any difficulties installing it ?
I would like to install it on the second Optical bay of a Mac Pro 2010 2.66Ghz 12 core.

Just checking in on this thread... can anyone confirm that the non-OWC version of that LG drive works okay under OSX? I agree it seems that it should, but I'm having issues making it do so, and I'm not sure if it's my setup or actually the drive that's the issue...

I didn't get mine through OWC, works just fine. What exactly is not working for you?

Edit: I just saw your post in the other Blu-Ray thread. For now, you probably won't have much luck burning any BD-R using Disk Utility.

I've had good results burning SL discs using the free Burn, but that did come with some limitations: it didn't work well with DL discs (capacity reported as SL, if I remember correctly), and by default used an incorrect UDF version for Blu-Ray video (needed to create UDF2.5 image manually and burn that for video).

In the end, I just bought Toast. I'm pretty happy with that right now.

Just kinda a bump on this thread.

I too am thinking of ordering the LG WH10LS30K from Newegg, as I want to get the new 3TB WD Green at the same time and OWC isn't carrying that yet.

I'm a little concerned with the sleep issues and returning it isn't really an option for me, as I live overseas and will have to have Newegg ship the package to a courier service as they don't ship overseas. Any further comments from anyone using this? Is there a safer option? I don't mind paying more for a better drive. In my case, this would replace my optical drive in a 2010 Hexcore, as I have all my SATA ports in use and I am 50/50 OS X/Win7.

Yup, got it in my 3.33 6-Core. Works perfectly. Before this I had an previous model LG BD-RE in my 2008 8-Core, never had one issue with it.

I have an LG Blu-ray drive in my '08 Mac Pro. It does prevent the machine from sleeping - it goes to sleep then the drive accesses and wakes it up.

There is a fix however which is incredibly simple - leave a disc in the drive.

No idea why, but this enables the Mac to sleep as normal. I've had my drive a couple of weeks now and I often leave it on at night to finish off big downloads. Every time it has finished the DL and slept as it should do.

Hey guys, I remember something about a bug in a previous build in OS X. In "Energy Savings" there is a preference to "Wake for network access", which is supposed to allow remote access if the system is asleep. This "bug" would randomly wake the system, causing the drives to spin. It was a known issue and fixed, but perhaps it was only fixed for Apple BTO optical drives.

I DID have this issue now that I remember, when I installed a new optical drive in my 06 Mac Pro (it drove me batty as every few hours while sleeping I'd hear the fans and the drives go). I've never had this issue with the LG drives, and I've used three LG Blu-Ray drives over the past year on my Pro.

What version OS X are you running and do you have the "wake for network access" option checked? Just a thought.

I have an LG WH10LS30 installed on my mac pro 2011, and it works perfectly fine. I've also watch blu ray movie with it here is the trick though: download Mac BlurayRipper Pro 1.0.4 then rip your commercial block buster BD, you wouldn't believe it but after ripping there was no quality loss just 1:1 copy. Use VLC 1.1.9 to watch the m2ts file, I'm so happy to find this method to watch BD on mac DDDDDD no need for apple blu ray support. Screw steve jobs for not making it compatible with blu ray, why can he just work with sony and make even more money?

You're right, I don't believe it. I don't think that the ripper and VLC support DTS-MA audio, so there must be audio conversion to a lesser format. The conversion almost certainly causes a loss in audio quality.

I've got a UH10LS20 LG BR (Reader) in my '10 MP and have had sleep issues since installing. Went with the leaving a disc in the drive 'solution' but would love to find a drive that I didn't have to do that with; it's annoying.
