This has been happening to me intermittently. After coming out of sleep or rarely while I'm using my iMac, the screen gets "broken up". A reboot always puts things back to normal. Is this a video card problem? Thanks.

I've had those very same graphic effects on my iMac. Graphics problems happen--if they happen once or twice and they are resolved by a reboot, then the cause is most likely a corrupted file of some kind (which was my case). If the problem persists, then the graphics card may be a likely culprit. Hardware test is a good first step.

Thanks, guys. Will do the check as suggested. This error is irritating as sometimes I'm forced to do a hard reboot. Where can I find a video card for a 3-4 yr iMac if it turns out to be the problem?

sleep mode problem

Last year I got 4 brand new 24 iMacs, straight out of the box.

ALL OF THEM did not come out of sleep mode.

I retuned them one by one and got another one.

I finally kept the last one and never use sleep mode.

That was the best solution the Apple tech came up with.

Well I ran the extended Apple Hardware Test and it turned out normal. I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Any suggestions? I don't want to have to do the nuclear option: Wipe and reinstall.

I know what this problem is.

You see when you turn the machine on and do the .............. wait, Holy **** is that elmo!?

One other suggestion is heat--get a temperature monitor to check temps and see if the graphics processor is getting excessively hot--and the fans don't kick in to cool it down.
