Ever since Apple has introduced Internet Sharing over USB in MacOS, I have never been able to get iMessages working correctly on my iPhone

Every single other app works normally with Internet over USB (including WhatsApp and Viber), but iMessages doesn't receive the messages. It only receives them when I unplug my phone and switch to wifi or 4G.

It also doesn't send texts. The progress bar hangs and the message is only sent when switch back to 4G or wifi.

I tried with other iPhones, other Macs, iMessages just never works with Internet sharing via USB.

Has anyone experienced that?

I haven't experienced it as I don't use it in sharing mode, only in hotspot (in which everything works for me), but it seems likely that as you have an iMessage service running on the Mac that will be receiving any messages on those ports? Is that what happens?

Your phone can't send text messages without having a cellular connection, no surprises there.

Texts in green or blue? Because the "classic" green needs a cellular signal.

It is entirely possible that Internet Sharing doesn't forward iMessage correctly as other apps work for me (as they do for you). I am using airplane mode on the phone and pulling internet over USB (which feels odd).

iMessage worked for me for a few minutes and then iMessage would only work from the Mac but not the phone. The phone will now only receive and will give a progress bar for sending. The Mac is still fine.

So now you need to give Apple feedback if you ever want to get this fixed. They clearly don't know about it if it has gone on so long. Good luck.
