Anyone here use hand straps, like the Canon E2 Strap? Better then the neck straps?

Thinking of getting and Canon E2 hand strap.

As nice as the included neck strap, i always found it to be finicky and in my way.

the hand strap seems like a nice alternative.

anyone have experience with these?

I ordered the canon E2 anyway but haven't gotton it, curious about others experiencs.
 
You should think about what you're going to do with your camera when you need both hands free for something else.

im not askign what im going to do when im not holding the camera, but if anyone has used this alternative strap.

if the camera is not in my hand, it'l be in my DSLR shoulder bag >.>
 
On both my Leica M and Nikon D700 I use the neck strap wrapped around my hand and wrist. The idea is exclusively as an anti theft device. Someone can run past and grab the camera, but it would take a concerted struggle to untangle the strap from my hand/wrist.

I know there are dedicated wrist straps and slings like Black Rapid. I just can't be bothered to spend the money to be honest. As for neck straps, pointless. the camera needs to be in your hand ready to shoot at all times, not dangling around your neck, even worse, with the lens cap on!
 
I never bothered getting a better strap than what comes with the camera (maybe I should...), but for a DSLR-sized camera I never carry it around my neck - that's just cruel. I make the strap the longest it can be and carry it either on the shoulder (like one would wear a tote bag), or across the body (like a messenger bag, but always in front of me, not behind), depending on circumstances.

I've tried playing around with wrapping the strap around my hand, and it just doesn't work for me. Works for my partner though, so maybe it's just something that's easier if you have larger hands.

There are exceptions to every rule ;) It's great to have the camera always ready, but after smacking my X100s into some juicy red mud while hiking up a mountain after a rain (lens first, naturally :eek:), I think I may need to reconsider the readiness/safety balance a tad bit.

Thank dog it was soft mud and not a hard rock, no permanent damage incurred.
 
I just use the stock Nikon strap. If its not round my neck, I wrap it around my hand/wrist.
I've seen the black rapid (I shoot RAW version) on the web, but don't really like the idea of my camera dangling down there.
 
CarrySpeed works well

I use a Carry Speed shoulder strap and hand strap. It is a little pricey but their FS-PRO model also uses an Arca Swiss compatible plate that mounts to the camera.

Look for Carry Speed on Amazon
 
I had case logic's quick sling & quick grip, which fortunately were cheap, I sold them off. I have gone strapless with my camera for my daily walkabouts, as they tend to make me feel like they're in my way. I know it's risky, but still, I hate them all.
 
Like others , I usually wrap the neck strap around my wrist if I'm somewhere where I'm likely to be shooting , otherwise the camera strap is on my shoulder,not around my neck …. Don't want to look TOO much like a tourist .
 
The first thing I did when getting my DSLR was to remove the neck strap and fit a hand strap instead. When carrying the camera, I just use the hand strap, together with the moulded grip I haven't dropped it yet. Hand straps are great.

I used to use one, but I shoot, 99.9% of my pictures from a tripod, so don't use it any more. For my 6D, it was perfect. It depends on the lens you have attached and your hand strength too, I think. I always found it so much more comfortable and stable than having a strap around my neck.

BUT... it needs to be a tad loose to allow you the manipulation of getting to all the buttons. Be very sure it is secure enough not to just slip off your hand. It takes a bit of experimentation to get the right mix of tight and loose so you can reach all the buttons with ease.
 
If by hand strap you mean grip strap then yes, I use one. I find neck straps close to useless and I haven't warmed to using sling straps. I normally have a shoulder bag to park a body in. I have been using an Op/tech grip strap on my D700 since I bought it in 2009. I am also now using an E-M1 with a RRS L-plate and a Herringbone leather grip strap that I bought on EBay. It's very pretty.

Personally, I prefer to use the black rapid than the neck strap or even the hand strap because of my camera's weight.
 
I had a hand strap on my old Mamiya 645 - a medium format film camera. Loved it. It was the best thing ever. When I was walking around, the camera was in the bag. Soon as I was in a shooting situation it was in the hand. It made it very easy to quicky bring the camera up to your eye and shoot, if a fleeting opportunity was developing. I also felt safer using the handstrap when mounting or demounting the camera from the tripod. I didn't have to remember to put the neck strap on... just picking up the camera automatically put my hand in the strap.

For ~10 years, I would just wrap the neck strap twice around my wrist and carry it around that way. On rare occasion, I'd drape it over my right shoulder as I hold the camera with my right hand, but I almost never used it as an actual neck strap.

A few years back, I finally got off my butt and got a hand strap, and I love it. The only "problem" with it is that it uses the tripod screw hole (rather has to by the camera design), so it's annoying to screw/unscrew. Yes, the strap has a pass through tripod mount, but there's no way I'd ever use it.

which one did u pick up? i just got my Canon E2 strap, love it more then the neck strap. even has a second hole to mount it on a tripod wihtout taking the strap off

only problem is when is et the camera down the obviously not level since the lens pulls it down on an angle

Some 3rd party one much like the E2. No idea the brand at this point.

I don't trust the tripod hole in it to not flex or break, and I have to assume it reduces stability, so I take it off for tripod use.
 
There are all sorts of ways to keep a camera on one's body. I find all of them have their use including hand-straps. I have used belt clip type devices that attach to a counterpart that is attached via screw to the tripod mount on a camera, holsters, harness, standard shoulder straps (various types from straight strap to ones meant to be more like a harness) and of course hand-straps.

When I shot production stills, I always had a hand strap and it attached near the top of the camera and the bottom on one side. My hand slid in and was naturally held hand against the camera. This was by far the best strap with respect to ergonomics. Back then, the camera, the drive, any flash and bracket could weigh quite a bit and the hand strap was a real saver for my wrist and hand.

My usual fair is a shoulder strap unless I am shooting continuously or some sort of action where I need to have the camera instantly ready.

Perhaps a good hand strap that attached directly to a harness shoulder strap will be the next step. - Get the best of both worlds.

you cna connect a neck or snhoulder strap with the canonn e2 strap even when its on
 
I had one on my 35mm SLR back in the day. I used mine with a neck/shoulder strap, so maybe a belt-and-suspenders kind of solution.

I liked being able to hold the camera loosely, but securely in one hand. I found that it fit/worked better with a battery grip than without. I didn't like how the wing-nut that attached the strap to the tripod socket protruded from the bottom. Never seemed like an elegant solution -- I wish camera manufactures had a strap connection point at the base of the body (i.e., two on one side), rather than only on the top.

Nowadays, I just use a strap, usually on my shoulder or across my body, but sometimes wrapped around my wrist.
 
so my CAnon E2 strap i got had an issue...kind of.


basically the bottom of the hand strap attaches via the tripod mount.

the mount on the strap has a rubberized surface to obviously chhsion the mount and the camera when tightened together

the rubberized surface has a textured surface, so wwhen i took it off the camera, it left permnament marks on the bottom sticker of the camera. (the sticker that has serial, made in japan etc).

didnt hurt the camera but i mean,....that dont look nice now :mad:
