Hi everyone

Bought a Mac Mini today with the intention of colocating it at Colocker in Milton Keynes (UK). Been talking to one of the staff on IRC and he says that people have put four or five in a single locker with the power upgrade option.

www.colocker.com (or I found them at #colocker on quakenet)

That being the case I wondered if anyone would be interested in sharing the space? Probably not interested in five people as it would get difficult to manage but maybe sharing with one or two others. I'm looking for a straight share of the costs not to make any money.

Locker is £49 and we would need the additional IP addresses for £10 so cost would be £30 each per month for two sharing and £20 each for three.

Anyone interested please drop me a message.

Uses 0.1A of power so space for another four if people want to share the locker? Should work out about a £12 each with five of us in there and a single IP address each.

Look at www.colocker.com if you don't know what I'm on about!

Also, for your £12, you'll be allowed to use their workbenches which have a ridiculously fast internet connection to them.

I hooked up my laptop whilst I was there to do some 'downloading' and managed to fill the hard drive up in the time it took me to install the Mini Mac in the locker.

You just need to pay for an access fob - I think they are £2 - but after that you can come and go any time you like.

Would (49 + 4x10) / 5 = 18 and not 12?

Neat idea though. Hope you get some takers!

Hi

No, the IP block is £10 for a block of 5 so it will be £49+10/5 = £11.80 each.

That's with 5TB transfer per month between us so 1TB each although I will never use that much so there will be plenty 'spare' capacity.

Forgive me, but what is a colocker? Why would someone put his mac into a locker? Why wouldnt you put it on your desk at home?

What are the advantages of a locker?

I can see a small business use.

you can video scan your shop for security and the hard copy of video is miles away in the co-locker.

Pardon my edit of the word colocker to co-locker. Some how I thought of something else when I first read the word.

Static IP address and faster internet. I'd imagine those two things would be some of the biggest advantages of hosting your services somewhere other than an average home.

That co locker idea is super slick. It's like having a safe deposit box for your data.

Hi Everyone

I've been at Colocker for a few months now and can heartily recommend the service. I'm hosting a quad-core Mini running Linux and it is doing a sterling job of serving up my various websites and as you can see I'm using next to no power.

The limit is either 120w or 240w depending on which package you pay for. I went for the lower one at £49 per month but I could get another 4-5 Mini's in there without paying any more. As I said above, if anyone is interested in sharing then drop me a line and we can split the cost.

Id be interested in sharing at that price!! I'll contact you. Is CoLocker open 24hrs as I work shifts..

Hi. Yes I have a day job so I can only get there evenings and weekends. They give you a key fob so you can get in 24 hours a day.

I also like the idea that they have work benches with fast internet connections on them that clients can use. My broadband at home is rubbish so it's really useful that I can stop in on my way home from work to turn over my download queue and play a bit of CS on a low latency connection.

Is there colocker in the US?

As far as I know the only one is in Milton Keynes at the moment but when I spoke to them they said they were looking to build more. I found them really friendly so just send an email and I'm sure they will reply. The address is on their website.

This is a really interesting idea, especially because I'm paying £30 a month to VPS.net for two small VPS servers. Sharing a Mac mini rack like this would be much more cost effective for me, and I could replace two 1GHz / 512MB / 10GB servers with a much faster and spacious Mac mini.

Unfortunately, I'm in Scotland. Which is way too far away. Plus my only Mac mini is a 2009 model, and it's currently in use as a jukebox / Netflix centre.

That is definitely an interesting twist on co-location and if I lived a bit nearer Milton Keynes I'd definitely be signing up!

The same £9.99 offer is running again this month if anyone is interested. I can highly recommend the service, so much so that I am going to take advantage of the deal and get a second locker. There are loads of USFF PC's for sale on eBay at the moment so I'm going to rent them out as cheap dedi servers.
