Anyone know how to use an external monitor when ONLY using Intel integrated GPU?

Hi, I recently was able to fix my Late 2011 MacBook Pro by using advice from a thread in MacRumors and a youtube video that someone created. The thread was: Force 2011 MacBook Pro 8,2 with failed AMD GPU to ALWAYS use Intel integrated GPU...

I am up and running however I have a nice 32 inch LG monitor I want to use as my laptop monitor is too small for my use.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can possibly NOT use the laptop monitor and ONLY use an external one now that I have forced my MacBook Pro ton only use the integrated GPU?

I don’t think you can. The video output is wired through the dedicated GPU.

Interesting, even though I set iGPU only via gfxCardStatus, it uses dGPU for video output?
I figured if I use iGPU only, it will avoid using dGPU altogether and avoids having dGPU failure as long as possible.

I use gfxCardStatus because the Kindle program of all things wants to force dGPU use.

Not possible... the display outputs are physically linked to the dedicated GPU. It is not possible to connect an external display to the integrated GPU in a MacBook Pro. This is true of all generations of dual-graphics Macs.

Got to use an external monitor via hp displaylink adapter and it works...which is USB to vga....but when I try my dvi to hdmi cable on the adapter the video is all scramble...so am wondering if there is a vga to hdmi cable that I can try...will update you all on the next try

Thats not an adapter, that is a USB graphics card. And with these cheap GPUs, there will be some cutting down in costs. So not every cable/adapter will work.

It's categorized as an adapter, since it adapts one port to another.



Anyway, I just got this, and it works (so far). It's basically the same as the HP displaylink adapter and they work with the same driver.

I just got it. I have tested it on our screen projector, both vga and hdmi works, although, the latter is a bit selective.

How did the Wavlink USB 2.0 to VGA HDMI adapter end up working for you? My 2011 MacBook Pro also bit the dust last week and I had to apply the Intel GPU fix to get my computer working again. Now I'm stuck without an external display and so far this looks like the best option available.

I haven't tested it fully, as in a whole day demonstration, it's a tad slow sometimes, but it works.

I was able to get an external monitor to work using only the Intel GPU but it was very laggy and I would not recommend it. I bought a USB to HDMI adapter and an HDMI male to male cable at Microcenter. Overall cost was about $50. I was excited to see that it worked, but unless all you do is read email, use the web, or type documents, then this solution isn't satisfactory.

I also called Apple and they confirmed that the 2011 line of MacBooks are considered vintage and there is nothing they can do to fix or replace the faulty boards anymore. I also checked with repair shops and no one had 2011 boards and the only ones they could recommend were "used" boards.

I decided to bite the bullet and went all in on a 2017 MacBook Pro and am loving it. Got a refurbished model on the Apple Store website for $400 off the regular price. The dongle adapters is the next hurdle I have to leap through but I think its worth it.

Well Here is my setup :

The Mac Mini runs a 50 Inch Samsung LED HD TV turned monitor / 2 27 inch ACER screens (on the left).
The 2 screens on top of the 50 inch are conected to a PC server. I use every inch of these screens for work and could not do without.

My Mac Mini is the last model of the REAL Mac mini ; late 2012. I have a 500 GB SSD and 2 external HDD's

I am a self admitted addict needing to try and test the latest and greatest. From Apps to hardware I just can't resist. 5 days ago it came back to bite me in the rear rather hard: I have the 2 27 inch Acer monitors connected via display port and...are you ready for this : Diamond USB 2.0 BVU 165, not kidding. I use Displaylink drivers to make this happen. ZERO lag or color issues (again not kidding)...Back to my story. Despite using this setup for my business full well knowing I'd up the creek if anything should go side ways I signed up for 10.13 Beta and faithfully installed updates without reading what these updates included. 5 days ago I pressed update for 10.13.4 and let it process thru the night. next morning I dropped my coffee discovering my USB 2.0 external monitor now had a bright yellow screen nothing else....

Not going to write a novel here but only summarize what followed: several uninstall/ re-install of DSL 4.0 /4.1 drivers, swapping cables , USB ports, inspecting the adapter for any connection loss nada. I then did a bit over 3 hours of searching / reading trying to find a solution. I saw several whohad the exact same problem (which lead me here to this forum) but none had offered up a solution which worked for me. SO with a new workday looming cringing of the thought having to enter the race on 3 cylinders I re-formatted my Main drive scrubbed it and reinstalled a "fresh copy" of the "Street version" OS HS 10.13.3 before I reinstalled any apps I installed the Display Link 4.1 driver ( which display Link point out in bold on their site "Might not work").

Well it did not work, only presented a new issue in all 3 screens were black after boot-up. If i unplugged the adapter the 2 screens would work but oddly in mirror mode and after logging me out having to sign back in. Back to jogging the inter webs for clues. I then learned that the 4.1 driver does not support mirroring and could result in logging the user out / back to log on screen. Thinking there had to be a way to block the system from forcing mirroring / deleting any "apple" imposed settings ( remember, new install) I found a downloadable zip file named "Reset macOS display persistence 1.0". This zip file contained a command script wich, from what I gather resets and prevents the operating system from configuring settings. I installed it and rebooted holding my breath...FAIL FAIL !!. Screens were black again. frustrated I started hitting "CMD F1" repeatedly and like a festivus miracle let there be light!. Day 2 and it is like the good old days ...

Update:

I've just recently had a whole-day seminar, and the Wavlink adapter works, although, a tad slow on the transitions. You'll have to get the device driver from Displaylink.

Just for information. My MBP late 2011 had a dead dGPU so I could not use my external 21:9 display anymore via the DisplayPort. I was on High Sierra (10.13.4) which did not support Displaylink properly.
Now that I used dosdude patch tool for installing Mojave, and connected a Startech USB --> 4K HDMI adapter, I finally can use my external display again.
No mouse lag or blank screens; it works fine on Mojave 10.14.2. Only thing that is a tad slower are the animations like minimizing or maximizing screens.

I am happy to report that my MBP 2011 with Sierra was able to work with the Wavlink USB -> VGA/HDMI/DVI adapter. I bought it from newegg and it arrived in the mail yesterday. Text editing and movie watching work fine. I haven't put it through a lot of paces, but having my MBP back to full functionality is awesome!
