I've got an itch for one of the soon to be released 24" iMacs but remember reading about some complaints of gradations on some of those screens (I'm not talking about the 20" models, which do have the inferior TN-panel screens).

I'm hoping whatever problems Apple was having with the 24" S-IPS panels are behind us now... does anyone have any information on that? I think the 24" 2.8 GHz extreme iMac is an awesome computer!

There were many, many posts of good screens, and there have been very few complaints here of bad screens in the last couple of months, if that's any sign. I am sure there are still a few bad ones occasionally, but it seems like the initial rush of complaints has slowed greatly.

cz.... that's nice to hear. Do you love your iMac extreme? Any complaints?

There will NEVER be a time where there will not be mixed reviews on consumer level LCD screens, just buy and move on.

I have the 24" extreme. Absolutely love it! Best purchase I've ever made. I recommend it without hesitation.

We've been real lucky I guess.

Bought the first 24" back in November I believe it was and no issues.

Bought the second one not much later, again no problems.

Went with a friend this week to buy his, and he has no issues.

Of course in all 3 purchases we went to the Apple Store and had them fire up the units before we bought them.

With two Apple Stores, less that 50 minutes away, I see no need to have anything that big shipped.

Someone already did a poll here and it shows that a good majority of 24" iMacs have absolutely no issues. Now people like Leon would like you to believe that the vast majority of iMacs are plagued with screen problems. Sure, there are still discussions of brightness non-uniformity but they're in the minority.

Reports of brightness non-uniformity problems with 24" ALU iMacs are still rolling in very regularly at discussions.apple.com..........

.............I am sure there are still a few bad ones occasionally, but it seems like the initial rush of complaints has slowed greatly.

+++++ And Apple has this amazing policy. If you get a bad one, they exchange it!

I do absolutely love it. It is a great machine. I bought it primarily to do HD editing in iMovie, and the usual base of photo and music management, and it works wonderfully for me. Rendering HD effects in real time effectively makes it the fastest computer in the world, as far as I am concerned. The 24" screen at first made me feel a little self-conscious like it was almost too big at first, but that feeling goes away after about a week.

I have nothing but good things to say about my Alu 24" iMac screen. I would purchase another one if I ever have the need for it. I would also not hesitate to recommend it to a friend or family member looking at one.

Had a 20 inch iMac Aluminum from October 07 that I purchased online at the Apple Store. Had so many problems with it and got upgraded to the 24 inch iMac Aluminum with 2.8 GHz (Extreme processor) and 500 GB hard drive in Dec 07 with no issues to date, loving every minute of it.

Do you love your iMac extreme?

I meant to post this, but forgot: what I ordered is actually not the highest end iMac. It is the base 24" model, with the processor upgraded for $250. This allowed me to not overpay for Apple Ram (it only came with 1 GB) and then order 4 GB from OWC, which can be had now for about $100. I then added a 1 TB external FW 800 for $320. This allowed me to maximize the bang for the buck, rather than paying for expensive Apple upgrades.

The one luxury I did afford myself was to take the internal HD to 750 GB, because I figured that could never be upgraded, and better to go big now.

new iMac owners world wide.

First about my self, I am a Director of a language learning center that currently has in use 32 oldish PC’s that are used on a daily basis by our guests and students from many countries worldwide. Some time ago the decision was made to up date and improve the student learning booth’s , where each booth has a PC , to try and improve
the students learning experience by installing the new iMac computer having a smaller size and foot print to increase the free space in each learning booth area, it was put forward that possibly the PC’s could be replaced with the new version of the Apple iMac 24 Inch model. So I asked our technical manager to do a feasibility study into acquiring and setting up 32 new Apple iMac 24 Inch computers. The technical manager has had no past experience with any Apple Products, so his views come unbiased by any allegiance or connection to Apple Computers. Initially his first port of call was to an Apple Store and discussion with the shop’s manger about our requirements and expectations. We decided to first buy One Apple Mac iMac 24 Inch computer to see how it would fit into the new learning booth layout along with its associated ease of student use Etc, the new learning booth lay out was designed to give the student a bit more privacy and a quieter learning experience, this makes the individual learning booths semi dark in a lighting ambiance type of way. Well the new iMac arrive and was duly installed into a new learning booth compartment area, where it was set up
and tested by several members of staff and current language students, this is where the doubt started to set in as to the quality of the new Apple iMac 24 Inch computer. With some of our standard learning programs loaded into the computer
it then became plainly obvious that there seemed to be a screen problem on our new iMac computer, which we now know has been called a ‘’gradient ‘’ problem. On seeing this screen problem I asked the technical manager to investigate to see if in fact
the problem was an isolated one only affecting the One new iMac we had bought for test purposes. On talking to the Apple Store manager he appeared not that surprised
to hear our comment about the iMac 24 Inch screen gradient problem we were experiencing , his comment was return the machine and they would replace it right away, which we did, on setting up the second new iMac 24 inch computer , this was found to have a similar screen gradient problem . Its here where one of our students
suggested we do some research by looking at the Apple Products users forums and
web sites , well the technical manager spent many hours looking at all the Apple
related forums and web sites he could find , to try and assess if our Two Apple iMac 24 Inch computer’s we had tested out , where in fact in the minority. One other suggestion about gaining more information on the possible iMac 24 Inch screen problem , came from another foreign student ( Polish ) who after talking to the technical manager said what about getting the foreign students here to also check out other Apple computer related web boards and forums in their own countries and languages. Well after a marvelous concerted effort by many of our current foreign
students currently with us, countless English and foreign language Apple computer web boards and forums were scoured for information about a possible screen gradient problem with the new apple iMac 24 Inch computer, our overall findings from not only looking at English language information available but also looking at numerous foreign web sites Etc , is that there appears to be a vast number of Apple iMac 24 inch owners world wide who are experiencing the same problem we had on the Two test Apple iMac computers. I my self did some quick reading on the English language web sites and Apple help forums like this one , and I feel some what that some forum members can some times become some what isolated to the big picture that really is going on in other parts of the World . I have made know our feelings to the local Apple store manage who said he will be contacting Apple about our problem, and I will of course let forum members here know the outcome in due course. To those who
would doubt our findings and all ways offer what seems a common stock web board or forum answer of , well Apple are selling many millions of computers
so may be this current screen problem affecting the iMac 24 Inch computer is only a drop in the ocean compared to the numbers now being sold, my and the technical managers reply to this stock answer would be , yes it may be only a drop in the ocean as compared to the millions being sold , but I would respectfully suggest that you cast off your English language boat , and sail to the vast numbers of non English language oceans and smell the odorous sea breeze coming from the vast numbers of disappointed new iMac owners world wide.

Some time ago........We decided to first buy One Apple Mac iMac 24 Inch computer......

How long ago? The theory being baked around here is that there were many stories like your repeating themselves around the world between the initial release in August and about October. Since then, those stories have slowed greatly. Curious when your iMacs were purchased.

And it may be a drop in the bucket compared to the total number sold, but I agree that it represented a big problem, due to all the forums posts and number of people getting multiple bad ones in a row. There was a lot of bad PR circulating around. I am sure this deterred some iMac purchases.

My hope is that Apple has improved the situation to the point where this defect is back down where it should be: in the noise. It certainly seems that way by judging the post frequency around here.

I bought a 24" iMac about 3 weeks ago, the first one had a faulty CPU(after a while it wouldn't boot, and from the kernel panic messages i deduced it was a faulty CPU) and a sketchy LCD backlight, as in it flickered and "twitched" occasionally. I then exchanged it, and now have an iMac with some backlight bleeding in the lower left corner, but you can only really see it when you're playing a movie.

The iMac is great, otherwise. If it worsens, I will probably send it in for repairs.

So no, I don't think the screen problems are behind us yet.

There was a post around here a while back about the construction of the iMacs and some foam matting that gets pinched that is inherent to the way it is designed to fit together, resulted in the backlight bleeding issue. It seems like something like that wouldn't be behind us until a refresh (any day now).

I believe the screen gradient was thought to be an issue with an inverter, which since it just a part, that Apple could address in between refreshes, and it appears they have.

I bought my 20" iMac at BestBuy about a month ago now. When I was looking at the 20" and 24" screens, the 20" seemed much brighter and the 24" had uneven lighting.

The screen on my 20" is 100% perfect!
