I rebooted my iMac and had no Ethernet. Through looking at console logs I found that the BCM5701 driver had gotten added to
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleKextExcludeList.kext/Contents/Info.plist and thus wouldn't load.
I had to boot from recovery and restore that kext from a Time Machine backup to get my machine working properly again.
Anyone know what the HECK can cause this to happen? It's a bizarre mystery; I don't recall doing anything odd on my system and it didn't contain that exclusion as of yesterday's Time Machine backup.
[doublepost=1456535561][/doublepost]Whoah, folks.. I looked in my install.log and noticed that it seems APPLE pushed this update via the "Install system data files and security updates" option in the App Store preferences. I looked in the pkg file it installed and indeed there it was.
You might want to check your systems and make sure this wasn't installed. This could be big news if this update breaks a large number of Macs!
